As Gujarat is a dry state, we had no choice. The Bavaria had a pretty authentic beer flavour albeit on the light side.

On my last day, I was a little tired of eating Indian food, so I decided to try Middle Eastern instead. Turned out to be a great choice. The smoked hot chilli peppers with spices made the prawns very tasty 😋.

Super yummy, especially the paneer. It had the smoky flavour from the grill. More importantly, the gravy was spicy enough, unlike the ones we had when we were in North India which were much milder.

Naturally I wanted to try some Gujarati snacks. Clockwise from the bottom:-
- khandvi - savoury snack made using gram flour, yoghurt and turmeric
- dhokla - fast food made using fermented batter of gram flour
- patra bhajia - colocasia leaves layered with gram flour rolled, steamed and fried

We had our lunch at the 1911 Restaurant where there was plenty from the buffet spread to feast on.

Dal (lentils) both black and yellow. I am not too sure why but dal from Northern India typically tastes better. The dal makhani (with black lentils) was not as good as some of best I’ve had but the dal tadka (with yellow lentils) was so yummy that I had to ask for more naan to clean it all up!

Paneer (cottage cheese). I prefer it when the paneer is grilled in a tandoor first to give it a smoky flavour. Unfortunately for me, the one served was not.

Bindhi (okra). I love the way okra is prepared and served in India. I think it is the spice and curry which combines so well with the gooey okra.

Hakka noodles. The is best described as fried noodles Indian style, not truly authentic Hakka cuisine (I am Hakka 😊). This is again not the best I’ve had in India.

Definitely visit the Imperial to absorb the history and beauty but don’t expect much from the food.

I call this Indian scrambled eggs. Love the addition of chilli and spices! One of my favourites to order for breakfast in India.

The paneer in India tastes so much better (than Singapore at least) and especially so in North India. I am told it is due to the quality of the milk.

One of my favourite paneer recipes is the paneer tikka where it is marinated in spices and grilled in a tandoor. The taste and aroma of the spices and grill totally satisfied my paneer craving.
