A long winding alleyway, almost claustrophobic with wires and lanterns and decorations and buildings, surrounded on both sides with smokey bbq filled eateries. Each restaurant, just one room for maybe 10-12 people sat together around the cooking station. We picked the only one that seemed to have any spaces and perched on stools whilst ladies prepared our kushiyaki (skewers of veg, seafood and meat for huzbo). One of the most atmospheric meals I’ve ever had. As there weren’t tonnes of veggie options I had garlic skewers (literally cloves on a stick, grilled!), green peppers, and mushrooms. Washed down with plum wine which was worth the next day’s headache 😹

These were from a traditional mochi vendor on the main strip in Koyasan, the white one was plain glutinous rice filled with red bean paste and the green was mugwort flavoured. Mugwort isn’t the greatest not going to lie, it has a herb-y but bitter taste. Quite a different flavour from your more regular mochi I still preferred the red bean paste! .

The Japanese really pride themselves on making the freshest most delicious food. It will be no real surprise that sushi 🍣 in Japan is better than any you will have elsewhere in the world. We had a busy day of sightseeing and ended up visiting the Samurai Museum before it closed. By 9pm the place we had planned to eat at had already closed so we took a punt on Sushi Mamire in Shinjuku on the outskirts of Golden Gai. We chose a selection, I had some vegetarian options including eggplant 🍆 and pea sprouts which were delicious. I also had a cucumber and shrimp hand roll, and prawn and salmon sushi. All were exceptional. To make it extra fun we sat at the bar and could watch the chefs intricately preparing each one fresh in front of us.

📍 Sushi Mamire, Shinjuku.
🍽 Various sushi and handrolls.
💵 Not sure as a couple who we met earlier treated us (!!) but it was around 180-300 yen per sushi so not expensive.
📊10/10.

They even match the seasons and the seasonally available produce. This autumnal dango was flavoured (top to bottom) maple 🍁 sweet potato 🍠 and chestnut 🌰 the ultimate fall-time mix. Although speaking little English, the vendor mimed sniffing as he handed it to me and said “smell good!” And it certainly did! It smelled like autumn heaven 🍂 .

We cheated and had lunch in our gorgeous room at @parkhyatttokyo, and ordered room service 🙊 I really fancied hummus as I eat it all the time usually, so this bowl with pita went down an absolute treat! #hummus #hummusaddict #tokyo #parkhyatt #parkhyatttokyo #lostintranslation #japan #japanfood #tokyofood #roomservice

I had a dessert in London once of hedgehog dough balls filled with custard, turns out they are a common dessert in Japan! Similar to a doughnut in consistency, only with a crunchy and deep fried outer coating. The filling is a thick oozy custard 🤤

The monks do everything from check-in, to turndown service (making up your futon) and preparing dinner and breakfast. ...🌰...
We stayed in Soji-in monastery in Koyasan which is renowned for its high standard food. The meals are unlike anything you get in the West or even the rest of Japan.
...🍁...
Strictly vegetarian, the meals are exceptionally beautiful, consisting of dozens of small and intricate dishes served in stunning bowls, plates and cups which complement or match the design of the food. Each tiny dish is like a work of art.
...⛩...
Here, vegetarian means not only no meat or fish, but also no garlic or onions although eggs are permitted. This is due to the Shingon Buddhist beliefs (and something that is often seen in Asian religions, even in Singapore it is prevalent) that pungent vegetables are considered "hot," and are seen as liable to increase the body's desires and lusts.
...🍂...
Unfortunately as there were SO many dishes, with unusual ingredients and a menu in very poor English I couldn’t with any certainty tell you what this dish had in it (aside from the obvious green beans and cute maple leaf shaped carrot). I believe this dish had a piece of sweetened omelette stuffed with vegetables, a mochi glutinous rice ball of some description and a piece of boiled root vegetable, possibly a turnip. The soup was a form of miso. I never realised until this meal that there are multiple different types of miso, most of which I felt we tried that night! Swipe to see the array of dishes!

These bright green morsels of joy were stuffed with Welsh leek (yes, it specifically noted they were from Wales on the menu) and went really well with a dash of chilli paste and dunked in soy vinegar. In the background you can also see the bottle of Mio sparkling sake which I had been dying to try. A lot softer than the real deal and only 5% proof, it had a delicate vanilla flavour followed by the distinctive but toned down sake aftertaste.

I had been searching for one of these beautiful creations the whole trip and finally at Nishiki Market in Kyoto came across them!! There weren’t many designs left as it was nearing the end of the day (gone 4pm and the market closes 5pm sharp). I had a hard time choosing but eventually went for this maple leaf 🍁 as it also symbolises our autumn colours honeymoon trip ❤️🧡💛 The flavour was subtle and sweet not flavoured of anything in particular and was soft with a marzipan or soft fudge texture.

Nishiki Market is a foodie dream, I was on cloud nine the whole time and got a little over stimulated!! I bought and tried as much as I could but I was getting seriously sugared out! Stretching for 3-4 blocks on Kyoto’s more modern West Bank, Niseki Market is a really heady mix of local stalls selling both food and beautiful handicraft. Locals and tourists alike mill around the hundreds of food stalls offering a mind-blowing selection of delicious sweet and savoury dishes. Some are more palatable than others...the less tempting included baby octopus 🐙 “lollipops”, stuffed with quail eggs and skewers of sparrow, each stick with 2-3 barbecued whole birds, which were defeathered but apart from that were completely intact and recognisable 🤨

Finally on our last night whilst scouting for a place to eat along Kyoto’s gorgeous and atmospheric geisha haunt, Pontocho, we found somewhere that offered a variety of fillings! I opted for the prawn, and wasn’t disappointed, although as a caveat this dish is VERY heavy and the Worcestershire style sauce is cloyingly sweet. This dish takes a long time to prepare and although called ‘Japanese savoury pancake’ it is very unlike any pancake over had before. It is more like a Spanish omelette, filled with cabbage and various veggies, sometimes mochi (glutinous rice balls) and meat or seafood of choice (hence the translation of the name to “as you like it”), a liberal layer of thick Worcestershire style sauce and iconically patterned with lines of mayo. Finally, it is always topped with bonito fish flakes (so there isn’t a fully veggie option) which dance around beautifully in the rising heat (swipe for a video!).

Dango are similar to mochi in that they are made from glutinous rice but firmer so they hold their shape on the stick and don’t contain a filling. .

We had a quick bite at our hotel, Gozan Serviced Apartments as we had been out all day. I had a cheese and vegetable panini, which was so delicious and prepared by the one lady behind the counter. It took her over 20 minutes to make both mine and huzbo’s, starting with the cute little edamame salads in jars, preparing the plates of pickles and then toasting the sandwiches to perfection 👌#panino #panini #japan #kyoto #japanesefood #kyotofood #lunch #quickbites #sandwich #sandwichporn
