Ugly Delicious
I might be bias since I have eaten from this stall since I was young, but you definitely got to try it to know what I mean. Everything from the hand made noodles, to the use of mani chye for that additional sweetness down to the sambal chilli makes this bowl a comforting yet memorable ban mian. And if you are not aware, this is my number 1 ban mian in Singapore.

Also, do not be confused with the Boon Tong Kee chain of restaurants as there is no chicken rice here. Hence, what you should focus on instead is their signature kway chap and braised duck. For $10, excluding the kway, you get a set of kway chap for two which includes braised duck, pig intestines (both big and small intestines that were cleaned very well without any funky smell), egg, tau kwa and tau pok. Perfectly braised, these accompanying ingredients make this an enjoyable kway chap meal which goes superbly well with the spicy chilli.

Between the two, the dumplings fared better in terms of the bite and flavours as the xiao long baos lost out in terms of the minced meat filling, which didn’t have much of a texture. However, for the price, I shall rate this passable and worth a visit when you’re here.

Love it or hate it, rojak is a polarizing delicacy that’s essentially a fruit salad with dough fritters mixed in a fermented prawn paste. There are several places that do a mean plate of rojak and one of the best has got to be Hoover Rojak, which I grew up eating from. What makes them stands out is their consistency and quality in every plate, from using the torch ginger flower in the mixture to the addition of jellyfish and green mango besides the main staple of dough fritters, pineapple and radish.

These steamed dumplings drenched in a Szechaun chilli oil mixture comes in a plate of 10 at a super value price of $4.50. For its quality and quantity, I cannot find anywhere else that can compete with them. These perfectly-shaped dumplings filled with pork and scallions, handmade and steamed upon order are such a perfect slurp-worthy treat for any time of the day.

Coincidentally, both stalls have been awarded Michelin Bib Gourmand and 梁照记 is an absolute legend in its own right. There are only two braised duck stalls in Singapore that I will specially travel for, one is at Seah Im Food Centre and the other is this. Drizzled generously with the thick gooey sauce, there is magic and stardust given to these ducks as the meat has zero gaminess and is very tender to the bite. Will you travel for this?

Nothing fanciful, not instagrammable; this photo is just a capture of the simpler things in life that we usually take for granted. Who would have thought that a simple white loaf with kaya and butter spread can bring so much joy from the first bite. Notwithstanding it’s old school facade, this bakery has been around for many years and even used to supply bread to Ya Kun Kaya Toast. For all its depth in history and heritage, it’s no wonder why Sing Hon Loong is able to withstand the ever-changing landscape and yet remain relevant for many generations. The real shining star has got to be the soft yet chewy white bread that is a fond reminisce of many’s childhood. Try it if you are around the area and let me know what you think?
