3 slices belly chashu, wood ear fungus, spring onion, nori.
Kanada-Ya in London is one of my favourite ramen places in the world! 🍜
When I found out they were opening here, I had to try. Sadly Kanada-Ya in Singapore can’t compare.
1. The pork broth, probably the most disappointing, is thick, one-dimensional, bland, doesn’t have any taste or flavour. It lacks salt and umami. It tastes creamy and not like pork broth, more like a tasteless, liquid carbonara sauce. It tastes like they added flour tbh. Did not, could not finish.
2. The chashu is plain, nothing outstanding. The spring onions taste dehydrated. You know when you buy instant noodles and there are spring onion bits inside? It tastes like that. Sort of like cardboard.
3. The forms for filling out your order are recycled (i.e. multiple people have used the sheets before and the unerasable pencil marks are still there).
4. Not all chairs have a back so you’re sitting on a stool.
5. The music is rather loud J-Pop/J-Rock. You know the volume of music in restaurants has been increasing over the years? To encourage diners to eat quickly and go.
6. It’s hard to get the waiters’ attention and they don’t seem well trained. I said I was ready to order and gave my slip to the waiter, and thought the waiter was going to take my order, but he didn’t and just put the paper back on the table. Until the manager-looking guy came round to ask if we had ordered, then only was our order taken. Then the food took a while to come.
7. Idk why people open a ramen chain when they can’t run it well? As a paying customer, it just seems cheap, low budget and not value for money to spend almost $21 for this experience! This isn’t a place I‘d visit again or recommend. Despite being newly opened, there was no queue, not a good sign.
8. The mall itself is meh with a myriad of not pleasant smells :/ Shops here are what you’d find in a heartland mall, except this is new. The touchscreen directory on various floors don’t work. You have to use mobile data and Google instead.
9. There are better shopping malls and ramen shops in Singapore. Today’s experience was not great.

Really enjoyed the Ro Ppong-Roje which is a tomato cream jjampong served with mussels and prawns topped with mozerella cheese and mentaiko. Some may find this dish heavy but wow you will be surprised at the explosion of aromatic herb infused sweetness and tanginess. However, it seemed a little bit like eating pasta with an added chewiness to the noodles that can sometimes make you feel a bit ‘gelat’. Priced at $17.80, I say bring a friend to enjoy this with as the noodle portions can be pretty large.

Mmmm, and the verdict is that I would love to return again for that yummy okonomiyaki 😊 Specially great for lazy people like me because they’ll cook this and serve it to you on a hot plate. They also cater to those who prefer to DIY for a more authentic experience. Prices start at $10.80++, with option to add noodles to turn it into a modanyaki~

We also tried the omelet yakisoba (sauce flavour). A large serving goes for $16.30++ and can feed 2 people! Egg was still soft and runny when served, too bad the pork and squid inside were overcooked and too tough 😅

P.S. Hope they maintain the standard of the okonomiyaki and don’t let it slip if the chef returns to Japan 🙏🏼

This was an appetizer that we all enjoyed (though we expected something more like satay). The larb (minced pork) is stuffed into the skins and deep-fried, making for addictive fingers of crispy, meaty packages that’s great with accompanying sweet and sour sauce.

Tucked away on the second floor of HillV2 in Bukit Timah, we have Kinsa Sushi offering a range of authentic Japanese dining. .

Initially, I thought the portion would be much smaller but little did I expect that slices after slices of wagyu roast beef were used to make up this monstrous Japanese don. Sitting on top a base of mixed Japanese rice and barley, the beef slices were coated with some kind of sweet beef sauce which brings about a myriad of flavours from savoury to sweetness. Definitely value-for-money and you will end up being filled after you have conquered the mountain. The set ($24.90) comes with additional sides of tofu, salad and a bowl of oxtail soup.

All the pricey goodness in a don. Portion was rather big you could share it with a friend.
Would I come back? Hmm probably not but just because their stuff are overpriced not because the food isn’t good

This bowl is full of yummy goodness!! Comes with multiple slices of well-marinated ribeye beef, a sizeable piece of pan seared foie gras, truffle hon shimeji mushrooms, a 72degree onsen egg and garnished with fried garlic chips, japanese pickles, spring onions and sesame seeds. Mix everything in with the bed of rice underneath and what you’ll get is a seriously delicious tasting combination! 😋 it is quite a sizeable portion and can be shared by two persons 😊

The hyped Unagiya Ichinoji which only took 15 minutes to queue for! Nicely grilled Unagi with slightly chewy texture. It’s a pity that it’s too thinly sliced which makes it hard to taste the flesh. A little lacking in the richness of the sauce as well. 3 out of 5 mochi 🍡🍡🍡

We initially wanted to try the soba noodles but they were out of stock. If I remember correctly, it cost $9.80 for the chicken and $14.80 for the beef. It is worth a try but I wouldn't go back again as the price isn't really worth it. The entire meal including Cheesy Pork Fries and a cup of tea cost about $40.
