Japanese ('cos it's always safe)
Have been back multiple times for one of the best quick fixes in this high SES neighbourhood. Service is quick, decor is basic and food is no frills yet hearty. The tuna was fresh enough although I prefer their salmon dons which come with nicely seared salmon cubes.
The salmon had a sous vide texture and just undercooked to retain a nice moist and oily texture. Mentaiko tamago was great too - cut in thick slabs and topped with heaps of mentaiko mayo.
Really mediocre for its price. Portions weren't generous. Fish wasn't the freshest. You can get a much better chirashi don at one of the many other more popular Japanese restaurants nearby. Just give it a miss.
Prawn tempura maki with mentai mayonnaise. And fluffed up with cookied prawns, caviar-lookalike, tempura batter bits and some other yummy unidentifable stuff. A feast for the eyes as well as the tastebuds, if you'd ignore that hefty pricetag. Definitely my favourite dish of the day.
Despite being one of the pricier items on the menu, this was quite a letdown. Salmon dons were still as yummy and good value though. Service was bad as usual and they only allowed us to use burpplebeyond once although four of us ordered four items.
Yummy runny eggs blanketing tomato-flavoured rice. A fan of this just cos im a big fan of eggs. While the mentaiko pasta may seem like a nugatory side just there to fill the plate, it was actually pretty decent with a nice al dente bite and gentle mentaiko flavours. With the combo you get a choice side salad as well (p.s. potato salad was the best).
Tastes as good as what you'd expect at an upmarket japanese restaurant, but at a fraction of the price. Came with salmon, tuna, scallops, sweet prawns and a tiny piece of uni, all so fresh it took my back to those days in Japan.
Give it a good stir to coat the noodles in a thick mentaiko mayo sauce and you got yourself a hearty meal. For big eaters, you get the option of upsizing noodles to 1.5x the usual portion. Nice slices of pork there too. But having tried a few other mazesobas out there, I'd say this pales slightly in terms of flavour.
Fishes can drown.. in a pool of mentaiko. For serious mentaiko lovers only. Check out that luscious creamy briney pink sauce blanketing the salmon. The salmon was nice and no complaints at this price point, especially with 1 for 1.
Now thats what I call A for Effort. Can only imagine the amount of work taken to create this beauty of a dish. Nice flavours although the scrambled egg wasn't as wobbly as I'd like and the chicken was a little hard. Otherwise still a super value-for-money meal given the hearty portions, especially for a place in the middle of town.
Nobody orders chicken at rakki bowl, because why would you when there's beef and chirashi. But unfortunately they were out of fish that day so we had a taste of the chicken. Something I reckon you can get anywhere else, so I'd say go for the beef anytime.
I really like their gyu don because it's super tasty although of a leaner cut without the fatty bits. Meat is tender and sauce is tasty. Even better with a perfect onsen egg. Definitely coming back, its on #burpplebeyond.
