Best crab croquette I’ve had.

A deceptively simple snack that blew me away, the crab croquette (2 for $8, 4 for $15) was amazing. It had a light crisp batter that housed a piping-hot thick and creamy crab filling. But what stole the limelight was the sensational basil vinaigrette which my dining party refused to let the waitstaff clear because we wanted to have it with everything!

These golden fried snacks are a must at Kilo.

Sushi that’s unparalleled in value.

I haven’t posted about Ryo Sushi before because it’s one my favourite sushi haunts and I didn’t want to make it harder to make a reservation for myself. But it’s well known now and time to give it the recognition it deserves.

I’ve been here a couple of times and the standard of the nigiri has always been of high quality - consistent freshness and sizes. However, the omakase may differ from time to time due to the seasonality and availability of seafood but it’s always good. My favourites include the scallop (hotate), the chūtoro with housemade shoyu foam, otoro, cured akami with yuzu zest, cod fish sperm and of course, anything with uni.

A simple & light dish.

A dish that can’t go wrong, the scallops & cold pasta. Beautifully seared scallops line atop a generous clump of chilled angel hair pasta. It’s accompanied by a seasoned seaweed salad that has been marinated with truffle oil and yuzu ponzu.

It took me years but I’ve finally tried Matchaya and it’s so good! The matcha flavour for the soft serve is so rich and intense! One serving is $5.90 but there’s a #BurppleBeyond 1-for-1 promotion for a soft serve + drink which is a saving of $10.

Eggstraordinary eggs & snags that are indeed extraordinary.

Bearded Bella co-owner Regina mentioned that this brunch dish was inspired by a cafe in Melbourne and having it really did send me back to the city!

Each element of this dish worked so well together to create this hearty and scrumptious meal. For the eggs, they were beautifully coated in a light umami crispy crumb that encapsulated the rich golden runny yolks. The chicken harissa sausage entails a spicy and piquant flavour which balances the pleasantly tangy beetroot purée, the delightful bitter asparagus and the rocket leaves with thinly sliced parmesan. An overall grand slam of a brunch dish!

Holy cow. Pretty much how I would describe this bowl of beef sukiyaki don.

Finally opening its doors to the public today, I reared up for a visit to @ramen_keisuke’s newest concept, Beef Sukiyaki Don Keisuke. I queued up for close to 2 hours before getting seats while also being notified that they ran out of the wagyu slices. 😫 Looks like I have to come back another time. Nevertheless, I settled for the beef sukiyaki don which uses the chuck eye roll cut of US prime beef.

I wasn’t settling for less but a meatier and beefier (duh) taste. For the price point, this bowl is so attractive as it comes with a slab of braised tofu, shimeiji, onsen egg and veggies. It also comes with appetisers such as sesame tofu with wasabi and miso soup. Overall, it’s one of the best beef bowls in terms of taste. I’ve got to try the wagyu to see if it’s the best in taste AND texture. .
I love the open concept in which you can see every process of the cooking done in the kitchen which makes the dining experience extraordinary. #burpproved

So satisfied!

Can’t believe there’s such affordable Japanese in the CBD area. For $13.90++, you can have Gyoza King’s gyoza set meal.

The set consists of 5 gyozas of which you can select either pork, chicken or prawn, Koshihikari rice, a soup and two side dishes. I opted for the stir fried egg with Chinese chives because LOOK AT HOW RUNNY IT IS. It was great when one eats it with the rice. I also picked the chicken nanban because who doesn’t love fried chicken.

You may also choose deep fried chicken with spicy sauce and mixed sesame, spinach with soya sauce and bonito flakes, pork sukiyaki with raw egg, stir-fried brinjal with miso, deep fried prawn with mayo and deep fried white fish with tempura sauce.

One of my favourite cakes and in my opinion, the best cake at Cake Spade.

The three layered angel food cake is packed with layers of a decadent and slightly bitter dark chocolate mousse. The best part would be the thin but spectacular layer of crunchy hazelnut fueilletine which adds dimension to the cake. The cake is topped off with gold flakes and a seasonal fruit, making the dessert befitting of the name, chocolate royaltine cake.

A scrumptious rice bowl packed with lots of flavour!

I ordered the pork jowl don because it sounded like such a hearty dish on the menu.

Atypical of most rice bowls, this comes with garlic fried rice which is superb when mixed with the onsen egg. Some people would prefer to have uruchimai, or pearly white Japnanese rice, but I think the fried rice makes for a more well-rounded dish. The grilled pork cheeks were tender and well-cooked and seasoned. Definitely left wanting more!

Feeling aimless in life now that McDonald's has ceased its Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Burgers? Fear not for The Quarters has come up with its own rendition - The Real McCoy (S$16 but for a limited time, it's S$14!)

As pictured, there is no shortage of salted egg yolk sauce in this burger and it's more velvety compared to the McD's counterpart. However, the star of this dish would be the crispy fried oat-battered chicken thigh! It owes its flavour to being marinated for 24 hours in a secret local spice mix.

Thank you Burpple for the invite for the Tastemakers Eatup and Chef Deming for hosting us!
