Decent coffee, decent baked salmon, decent soba, with decent settings that remind me of Ch5’s Tanglin. A quiet place to chill especially if you are living in Everton/ Spottiswoode!
$5 contains fried and boiled wantons, char siew, soya chicken and added a little mushrooms. I prefer adding $1 for some kailan! Decent wanton mee, meat goes really well with their homemade chili sauce (mixed into the sauce)!
I think “Mixian” is another term for thick beehoon. Man, this is the best ever Hong Kong style café (cha caan teng\茶餐厅) I’ve ever been to! Pork Cartilage was cooked to perfection, it’s almost like konjac jelly, firm but disintegrates rapidly upon chewing, a wonderful experience! They had not disappoint the masters from Kagoshima! 100% worth it!
Having a late night? I’ll always crave for this mee sua in Kembangan (I’ve ordered all-pig’s-kidney version which is more ex than the usual $5 pig’s organ mee sua)! Though today’s pig’s kidneys are slightly overcooked (a little too chewy), I still love the texture of mee sua in this herbal pork soup! I’ve always wanted to try the Black Chicken Herbal Soup but till today, I’ve yet to because this mee sua keeps making me come back for more!
Under Tung Lok Group is Taiwanese cuisine centred restaurant, Shin Yeh. Here for a reunion lunch and this Shark’s Fin broth caught my attention as it came with much crab meat and roe!
Never knew Teochew muey can be this yummy until I first dined at Ye Lai Xiang. As the restaurant name goes, “fragrance when night falls”, I wondered was it because of the night rain or the strenuous exercise I did before dinner that made this so yummy! Love today’s lala (clams) - fresh and juicy in light curry; also not forgetting its very crunchy French beans that goes so well with the rice porridge!
Another Mala place in the west! Meats are very fresh, imagine the thick juicy fish fillet, and those thick slices of MaLing luncheon! Wei-la level is really too mild, no kick, so it’s good for those who wants to try but afraid of it being too spicy! Approx $21 for this portion!
In Telok Blangah Crescent, the coffeeshop beside the Hawker Market (apologies for the bad locale tag), rests a Mala Xiangguo stall which for 3 pax, we only paid $18! Its Wei La (microspicy, first level of spiciness) would already send you sweating buckets! Ingredients “ala carte” from its refrigerator, greens are very fresh but meat are frozen.
Most delicious porridge in this Hawker Centre, IMO. Its “pork” actually comes in both sliced and minced meatball, and I especially love the springy texture of the meatball and it seems like they added salted fish in it, which goes well with the velvety porridge!
This is on Burpple Beyond! Should have checked the reviews before deciding (I was late and ordered the first nice pic on the menu that caught my eye)... the chicken thigh meat was clearly double-fried, dry and bland, I yearn for more sauce the more I ate. Get their Chirashi bowls or maybe Tendon Mixed Bowl instead!
Hailing from Guangdong province, Tàn Yú (“searching for fish” in Mandarin) serves grilled fish in spicy soup! We had the Limbo Fish with Green Peppers. [[INSIDER: Try the Honey Toast side dish dipped in this soup, the sweetness is enhanced and we literally went mindblown!]] If the numbing effect comes in, have some Rice Wine Tangyuan to douse the spices! Overall, lovely food, good use of technology, but service could be improved even more.
We came as 3 pax and auntie recommended a medium sized pot (said a small one feeds 2). Don’t come here for the service. The soup is much flavoured with long boiling of what tastes like hei-bi (dried shrimps) and maybe bones [edit: internet says they used Chicken Feet for its broth] I’d prefer if the fish isn’t deep-fried though... [edit: they fry fish head, so if you want white meat make sure you let them know!] Not sure, but I felt somewhat thirsty after the steamboat...
