Suan La Fen was surprisingly less common than I thought to be in Guangzhou. I was really craving for one that day and settled for this place even though they specialize in duck vermicelli soup. 😂 Although it was comforting to have hot soup in the cold weather, the broth was average with a lack of spice. The noodles were the usual chewy and thick sweet potato noodles, but the best part is something we realised is a default topping for suan la fen in Guangzhou - crunchy preserved veg and instead of peanuts, they use chickpeas that were pretty addictive!

Kinda shiok to eat after days of noodles and rice, but this was very pricey for what it was, even though it was one of the cafe’s signature dish - simple toasts with condensed milk and cheese. It was quite fragrant but would have been better if they were more generous with that layer of cheese. Would say to skip this!

For an additional $0.80, this was a much more value for money dish compared to the cheese condensed milk toast (¥20, S$4) we had prior. Almost everything in this cafe is HUGE (I can’t even describe how huge but one of their signatures is baked rice/pasta stuffed and overflowing in a WHOLE LOAF OF BREAD that’s served vertically standing on a plate - just imagine that haha), and this croissant was not an exception. It’s usually a snack but theirs is better shared among 2-3 😂 Wasn’t exactly the usually flaky croissant texture, but it was decently crispy and buttery. The thick cut of tender pork was the star and complemented the cheese-mayo combi pretty well.

银记’s a well known chee cheong fun shop you can find in many places in Guangzhou. It’s been around since 1958! We went with the classic prawn chee cheong fun. It’s slightly more expensive than the road side stalls you’d find along the streets and although it’s still pretty good and silky smooth, we didn’t think the quality’s the best out of all that we tried - their skin was a little too soft and not as consistent throughout.

Top on the shop’s best sellers is this 200% Chocolate Drink! It’s basically like our Milo dinosaur but made with chocolate powder. It had a nice hint of bitterness but wasn’t as rich as I expected it to be, while the chocolate ice cream was mediocre. It tasted like regular chocolate milk after awhile and it’s very pricey for Guangzhou prices. Skip this!

I usually opt out of peanut sauces but this was really good! You don’t get the usual thick and heavy mouthfeel where the peanut flavour just overwhelms everything. This was a harmonious mixture of chili oil, 榨菜, peanuts, peanut sauce, etc. that was slightly spicy and so addictive. Noodles had a good bite and this was just so shiok to eat in the cool weather while walking along the streets!

Edit: Oh man, just went back again and we were disappointed that the noodles were dry and sticky, without sufficient chili oil in the mixture. Think it also depends on who’s the cook!

Have been eyeing this claypot rice place near our accommodation since day 1! People usually come for their claypot porridge in the mornings and their rice in the afternoons and nights. It’s crowded most of the time too, so you might have to wait a while if you catch them at the wrong timing. We went with their top seller, the signature preserved meats claypot rice + an egg (¥2, S$0.40) to share and IT WAS SO GOOD. Unlike Singapore’s claypot rice that’s heavier with the use of dark soy sauce, there’s only light soy sauce here. Some might thus find this a little plain in comparison, but I loved the fragrance and how the flavours are ‘natural’ based on the toppings you chose! Portion is huge too (I don’t understand how people can finish one whole pot themselves!) and very value for money.

Wasn’t intending to get this but we couldn’t resist after passing by several of their crowded outlets. It was actually really nice! The crust was slightly biscuity with a crunchy top layer, while the cream filling was light and not at all jelak, though just a tad too watery. You won’t feel sinful after having it too as it’s not too sweet. We actually went back a few times and managed to try almost all the flavours. 😂

Since we already queued to get a cheese tea, might as well get an ice cream too right? 😂 They had a few options - 莓莓冰淇淋 Strawberry Ice Cream (¥23, S$4.60), 芒芒冰淇淋 Strawberry Ice Cream (¥18, S$3.60), 波波冰淇淋 Bobo Ice Cream (¥16, S$3.20) and the classic 茶王冰淇淋. We went with the classic and chose the red blossom tea. Portion was good for its price similar to SG’s, but what I liked better here is the stronger tea fragrance! The ice cream itself was also smooth and creamy. If you’re only getting ice cream, you can skip the waiting queue and get it immediately after payment.

First tried HEYTEA in Vietnam and now from the country it originated from! Went with King Fone and really liked the tea fragrance. Had a few cheese teas thus far and HEYTEA’s cheese foam still feels the best to me - it’s sufficiently cheesy but doesn’t overwhelm the tea itself.

Also, didn’t expect it at all but the queue here is MAD (you easily have to wait over a hundred numbers cause they allow people to order through their app without queueing too) but thumbs up to the really patient servers who are really efficient! They have lots of people working behind the counter so the wait is actually not too bad.

Was so excited to get this liang pi after seeing the guy chopping the noodles fresh! The noodles were much more springy and q than the ones I’ve had in Singapore - but both are good in their own way. The spices had a really shiok heat with a slight numbness. Not the best but works if you’re here!

First food we had in Guangzhou when we were starving after our delayed flight! Surprisingly fresh but not that plump, though you can’t really complain for the price for half a dozen. They’re super generous with the garlic that makes it more fragrant but not pungent.
