Bougie brunch, scrambled eggs and a cuppa coffee. Sometimes all you want is a good old café lunch (or very late breakfast). This is a list of all the dishes I’ve found that satisfy this very specific craving.

Three humongous wings, fried in crispy batter, and served with a side of your choice of fries, coleslaw or potato salad. The wings were juicy and perfectly cooked, while the potato salad was creamy and tangy. Very nice decor and environment too!

Homemade sourdough topped with fluffy scramble, chunks of crabmeat, and drizzled with chilli oil. The chilli oil gives a spicy kick to cut through the heaviness of the eggs and crabmeat. It’s a rather large portion so prepare your stomach!

Fluffy scrambled eggs on fluffy rice, topped with ikura and nori flakes. It’s a simple yet filling dish, and will only set you back RM13.

Baked egg in deliciously spicy marinara sauce, with mushrooms and a generously sized chicken sausage. Served with a side of homemade sourdough and priced at RM19.

Pretty much what you’d expect from a chicken sandwich. I didn’t taste much chipotle though, and would’ve liked some sauce on the chicken as it was a bit try. The onions were a nice touch, and the shoestring fries were a great accompaniment in terms of texture. All served with a side salad for RM18.

Smoked salmon, a poached egg, avo and a smattering of hollandaise are all packed in between two slices of bread to make this sandwich. Its served with a side salad and shoestring fries (which are basically a hybrid of potato chips and fries), all for RM22. I thought the bread could’ve been more flavoursome as it served more as a vehicle for the toppings than an accompaniment. Everything else was pretty good though, and props to the shoestring fries for not tasting completely of oil - as most are wont to do.

It’s in the name: BIG breakfast. VCR’s main breakfast offering is a plate piled high with sausages, ham, eggs, tomato, salad, mushrooms and a lamb-tomato sauce. My only gripe is that the salad seems to take up most of the plate, rather than being an accompaniment.

The ricotta is a light and fluffy cloud that sits atop a thick slice of toast. Paired with jam, this ricotta toast is a great snack or light lunch option. Goes well with a long black.

This dish includes a whole avocado, so approach with caution (i.e. an empty stomach)! Poached eggs sit atop slices of chicken ham, balanced on top of avocado halves. The overall taste was good, but there were a couple areas to be improved. Namely, the bread wasn’t quite toasted enough and the hollandaise sauce could’ve been thicker so as to coat the eggs nicely.

Spaghetti, tossed in an avocado sauce and served with prawns, squid and cherry tomatoes. While it could’ve used a smidge more salt, the taste of the avocado in the sauce was fresh and light. I felt the portion could’ve been bigger considering the price, but overall a dish well done.
