@enjoyeatinghouse has been around in the F&B scene known for serving comforting zi char with a modern twist, some dishes even being family recipes handed down such as the Grandma’s Te Kah Bee Hoon. This is my first time at the Stevens outlet other than the Kam Leng Hotel outlet that I have been to.

Delightfully, the taste of the silky egg seafood crispy hor fun is still as how I remembered it to be. It’s an interesting play on texture, and it’s 1 of the 2 places that I know serving crispy hor fun so far. (The other being The Dragon Chamber). Flat rice noodles deep fried to a crisp akin to crackers while soaking in a rich egg sauce topped with prawns, pork, fish fillet, squid and shiitake mushrooms. The trick to enjoying this dish is to savour it immediately upon serving, as the fried hor fun can turn soggy rather quickly. Some might find it a little pricey due to its portion though.

The other main that we had was the Schweinshaxn burger, or pork knuckle in malt bun. Although the malt
bun didn’t really taste very different from the usual buns, the huge meaty pork knuckle chunk with crackling skin made up for it. The meat was also cooked till tender and easily bitten off. In fact, it was as if the entire dish was translated into a burger as there was also Sauerkraut, a traditional sour shredded cabbage salad and pickles. Served with fries.

Hands down this has to be one of the best Burpple beyond deals to consider if you are dining in a group! Excluding the platters, there’s so many choices that you can use the deals for, for instance dishes under the house of schnitzel, the house of brotzeit and many more. Besides, Brotzeit is known to be generous with their food portion, even in a group, you will be so well fed!

The Huhnerschnitzel features a huge slab of breaded chicken breast, pairing with a choice of fries, side salad, potato salad or parsley potato. While some parts might get a little dry inside (not surprising also because it’s chicken breast), the breaded batter was tasty, not overly thick nor greasy. It comes with a side condiment to dip in, the sweet cranberry sauce. Although the sauce would help in reducing the dryness, I didn’t really find it complementing as it was too sweet fruity for the chicken. Given the portion of the schnitzel, I couldn’t finish the shoestring fries.

Wanpo Tea Shop, originated from Taichung in Taiwan, serves pretty fine quality tea of a wide variety. We had a boba taro milk which had chewy caramelic boba pearls in taro fresh milk of a thick consistency. It’s hard not to taste the huge chunks of taros, and it’s probably recommended only if you are truly a taro lover. We also had a tea based drink that was light and refreshing; the sugarcane baozhong tea. While the partner felt that it was like a diluted sugarcane drink, I thought it was thirst quenching as it is not as fermented as oolong yet falling short of the sharp green tea notes. In fact, the sugarcane had a lingering, delicate sugary sweetness.

Opened last November, it is not difficult to spot 2nd serving located in Holland Village with its striking red vending machine door and a pastel pink interior. Funky-looking, though unfortunately it has limited seating and no one/system to man the queue outside for diners waiting for seats. We were lucky to have gotten the bar counter seats after 15 mins.

Many have reviewed about their uncommon flavors such as tau sar piah and kueh Bangkit, but they are also known for their tea-infused flavors. Noting the availability of tie guan yin and pu er, I asked for the difference and recommendation, and was told that Pu Er would be slightly more bitter. More so of a personal liking, I enjoyed the slight astringency of the Pu Er infused gelato as it wasn’t overly sweet, yet not compromising the tea aroma at the same time. It also complimented the sweeter cookie dough flavor that we had.

If you are a fan of Mochi or Mochi waffle, then you should really try their seasonal fudgy Mochi waffle before it goes off the menu after July! Although it wasn’t presented as aesthetically impressive that we thought it would be, its taste exceeded expectations surprisingly. It was dense, filled with chocolate chips and warm, stretchy Mochi. Even for someone like myself who don’t usually prefer Mochi, I enjoyed the Mochi waffle especially as the gelato melted to pair with the warm Mochi.

Isn’t it cool to have a zi char stall in the hood that partners with Burpple Beyond? Didn’t have a good impression of their food initially based on my first visit for the pao fan which has since been removed from the menu, but still decided to give their zi char a try since it’s on burpple beyond, and we have found it to be more than worthwhile!

For 2 people, we had a large claypot noodles which was indeed relatively big in size and generous portions of ingredients such as pork slices, prawns, fish cakes and a runny egg. We also had the French beans with dried shrimps for a healthier meal; even with a medium portion, it felt like the amount of French beans was never ending. Pretty tasty as I attempted to pick up all the garlic bits and dried shrimps, essence of the dish that gave its aroma.

Thanks to #burpplebeyond, we enjoyed 2 dishes at the price of 1, and we are now addicted to their food! Given the portion, it’s superb value-for-money especially when you are sharing for a group meal.

An unassuming small shop space located in the Bukit Gombak neighborhood, Coconut & Fam serves coconut shakes that could easily compete with bigger brands and even taste better than some of them! For every new coconut shake brand, I’d always give the original flavour a try for the very first time. Other than how value for money their coconut shakes are given the large was really larger than usual, the overall taste and texture were quite balanced. Creaminess was just right, and the coconut bits were generously added. You can also customise the sweetness level to your liking. They also provide 2 small tables in front of the shop space should you want to enjoy and chill over their coconut shakes.

Thanks to #burpplebeyond, we enjoyed 2 large coconut shakes at the price of just 1! Mindblowingly $5 for 2 large cups which meant that it was only $2.50 for such a quality drink! Found my new favourite coconut shake!

Having been to their sister cafe, Burnt Cones, we knew that we could get quality gelato here at Up in Smoke. While it has already been opened for quite a while, the queue seems to still be pretty long and the limited seating capacity that you would probably want to take note of.

We went for flavours that we hadn’t tried before. The ube, with its bright purple color was quick to catch one’s attention. The earthy, rooty taste of the Filipino Yam was rather intense, although it slowly became cloyingly sweet towards the end. On the other hand, the coffee, a limited time flavour, somewhat fell below expectations. It was in fact more caramelic sweet instead of the roasted coffee note that came through.

Since the chicken & pancakes are part of their signature fried chicken series, we thought it would be wise to try out this sweet and savoury combination. The pancakes somewhat reminded me of McDonald’s hot cakes, where the buttermilk aroma was appealing and the texture was about right, fluffy while exhibiting a mild sweetness. Served with a small slice of butter and maple syrup. 2 pieces of signature fried boneless thighs accompanied along, but with its portion, the price seemed to be slightly hefty.

Fortunately, thanks to Burpple Beyond, we got to try both dishes in the Signature Fried Chicken range at the price of 1!

Another dish that you should try at The Assembly Ground is the truffle scented mushroom & egg pizza. In addition to the immense earthy aroma from the truffle oil, the overall flavour was robust. Topped with white button mushrooms and a runny egg in the middle. What I enjoyed the most was the thin biscuity-crust! I am more of a crust than a topping person, this was definitely one of the better crusts around!

The signature chicken cutlet, on the other hand, features a sizeable chicken cutlet with an immensely crispy batter. Again, you’d be delighted at the meat’s succulence although the slight greasiness might get jelak over time. That being said, it is still recommended for sharing. All sets were served with sides including achar, ikan bilis and peanuts, sambal and an hanjuku egg. The ikan bilis were especially addictive with its pleasant crunch which I wouldn’t mind having more, while the hanjuku egg was surprisingly oozy. I was also intrigued by the sambal, despite being rather fiery, boasting of a distinctive citrusy aroma from the addition of lemongrass.

Ever since the closure Nasi Coco, I can hardly find a place that serves quality traditional Nasi Lemak with a modern twist until we dropped by @husknasilemak located within Bugis Cube.

We were recommended the grilled chicken and signature chicken cutlet set for a first visit. Although it might come across as a little pricey, but the portion was a good justification. Digging into the fragrant rice, it was not difficult to detect the whiffs of coconutty aroma. As I took a bite off the extremely juicy chicken with a subtle hint of char, I realised it got sweeter over time. Only to know that this was a Moo Ping-inspired dish, hence the sweet marination which also included the use of lemongrass.
