New Restaurants, Cafes & Bars in Singapore: May 2019
From the Joyden Group (best known for Joyden Seafood and Joyden Canton Kitchen) comes this newbie in Great World City for elevated local fare. The Specialty Rose Wine Soy Sauce Chicken ($19 for half) is bathed in sweet-savoury caramel broth, best paired with Steamed Rice ($1.80) or Egg Noodles ($3.80). Lay on some of that homemade chilli sauce for an extra kick. Alternatively, try the buttery Cod Fish Steamed with Old Ginger Sauce ($24.80) garnished with zesty minced ginger. Wash the meal down with the Signature Homemade Red Apple and Hawthorne Drink ($3.50) — tastes just like our favourite childhood haw flakes snack!

Meet pide — a healthy Korean snack alike a hybrid-child of pita and buns. When in the Chinatown area, check out this new kiosk that doles out these hearty hot pockets. For a light lunch or a teatime snack, stop by for a chewy-licious Mrs Park ($9) featuring seasoned bulgogi beef, pickled jalapeños and caramelised onions with mixed greens. Our other favourite is the Eda-San ($7.50) with crunchy batter-fried edamame and creamy wasabi mayo. Pair your pides with the set ($4) that comes with Spicy Fries and bubbly Nutmeg Soda for a more substantial meal!

If you liked the food at Siglap's Rice & Fries (now closed), look to this new rice bowl spot to find chef-owner Ken Chia back in action. The concept is simple, centred around the idea of a solid, trustworthy meal — rice bowls! We like the 72-hour slow-cooked Beef Rice Bowl ($14) sporting tender, slightly charred beef slices and a wobbly 63° onsen egg on aromatic Japanese rice. Other favourites include their Teriyaki Chicken Signature Rice Bowl (S$8.00) and Mala Pork Collar with springy Shanghai noodles ($10).

Durian aficionados, leg on over to Potong Pasir MRT to have the king of fruits many ways. From ice cream to choux puffs and cakes, there's something for everyone. The light and smooth Durian Mousse Cake ($8.50 per slice) is a no-brainer — think fresh durian flesh atop spongy vanilla base that's studded with lightly salted, crunchy and Gula Melaka. For something easy on the go, the creamy Mao Shan Wang Puff ($3) is an excellent option to still get your durian fix. If not, get the Mao Shan Wang Ice Cream ($9 per cup) for hot day durian indulgences!

This brand new kiosk at Causeway Point serves up no-frills fare at affordable prices, whether you're looking to grab skewers to go after work, or pop by for a quick bite over lunch. We like that the skewers are flame-torched before hitting the grill, which results in a beautifully smoky char. For a little bit of everything tasty, get Set C ($7.90) that includes the tender Chicken Skewers, juicy Chicken Ball, flavourful Pork Zig-Zag and fried Kimchi Dumplings. Alternatively, Set D (S$8.50) features the Beef Zig-Zag in place of pork. Both sets come with either ramyeon or rice — go with the savoury seaweed rice that's extra flavourful!
