Deep down, we all know the recipe of Shiok. Singaporeans sure love their sauces; drown your dish with some decadent mayonnaise-mentaiko concoction, aburi the salmon up and you’ll earn a snaking queue of customers. That being said, I’m still a sucker for this formula when executed well. The Shiok Maki satisfies with its strong flavours and tastiness. Biting into the fried ebi at the core of the sushi, doused with their signature sauce, accompanied with the crunchy pops of ebi on top, id say the collective experience is one of the most delicious experiences life has to offer.

Popped by on a Friday evening, and was really happy to see a live band playing some tunes. As per the reviews on Burpple, I ordered the hot favourite - the Wagyu Beef Cheeks for my main.

The portion is humongous, this particular cow must have some huge cheeks (I wonder which ones in particular) for they were certainly sizable and very very filling. And as advertised, the meat was indeed very tender and parts easily under the knife. However, there was a strong gaminess that accompanied the meat, and that may deter those who isn’t a fan of such a flavour. I, for one, was overpowered by the umami flavour and the sauce was pretty salty as well. To quell that, id suggest pairing it with the mash and roasted peppers at the side.

Went with the regular beef patty burger at working titles new location, which is further down the haji stretch.

Fries kinda reminds me of Carl’s Jr - thick and chunky but the bite texture lacks consistency. The seasoning was pretty on point though.
The patty is juicy and respectable, but it’s just a tad bland, would have liked just a bit more salt and pepper to enhance the umami flavors of the minced meat. Moving onto the buns themselves, the moisture of the tomato slices actually disintegrated the bottom bun quite a bit, and nobody likes a soggy burger. They were nicely toasted, but I do wish the buns were substantial enough to not fall apart due to the contents of said burger. However, gripes aside, with the Burpple Beyond promo this nice little set only runs up to $7, so no complains about value here for sure.

Don Don is just heavensent for the people gymming around The Central area. Absolutely decent fare, especially when it’s past 10 where most of the offerings are 50% off. The lovely assortment featured here ain’t even $16 if I recall correctly

With the Burpple Beyond, this plate only runs up to a mere $7. The real star of this dish is the meatballs actually, they were pretty well done, with chestnut cubes stuffed in them for that delectable bite. The portion is quite nuts as well, a considerable amount of pasta sprinkled with assorted minced meat. Certainly worthwhile for the price paid.

Visited the new Two Men Bagel after their expansion of the store, with much more new seating spaces but boy was it still packed, the lunch queue was a 1/2hr wait. They also updated the menu, and I was recommended one of the staff to try this Shoreditch Bagel.

Coincidentally, I’ve been to the OG Shoreditch in London and had tried their famous salted beef bagel, so this particular bagel rendition had a lot to live up to personally. Happy to say, it was all kinds of delicious and the bagel stayed authentic and true to its roots.

The beef was piping hot and tender, so so tender really, it just peels off in your mouth as it is served in generous chunks. The lovely brisket was accompanied by sauerkraut and mustard, which packs quite a punch, a biting sting that takes a little getting used to but ultimately an acquired taste. Once you’ve fallen in love with that distinct flavour, you’ll reminisce that unique taste profile of the salted beef spicy mustard combo and it’s something everyone should give a try.

Looks rather unassuming, probably due to my terrible photography skills. However, beyond the superficiality of aesthetic food this was just yummy grub man, which at the end of the day is all that matters ain’t it.

Creamy smooth scrambled eggs is a lovely texture when you dribble it onto the sourdough, add on the portobello for a bit of tasty moisture as that is one juicy mushroom. Do go early tho, for this cafe has a cult following and a steady stream of customers throughout brunchtime.

I’m a growing man-child, so believe me when I say that something is truly satisfying when I talk about portion sizes, because that’s something I certainly care about. Whilst expensive, Collins does not scrimp with their ingredients, and that’s a solid A in my books. The greens cover the beauty of chunky salmon bathed in cheese, but this was a really solid and hearty meal. The salmon flakes off well and carries the heat from the pan, while the gooey cheese completes the umami profile of this meal. The only turn off point for me is the price, but for the premium ingredient of salmon, I’ll chalk this up as a luxury treat from time to time

Lots of songs of praise on their homepage, so my expectations were pretty high. Even with the Burpple 1-for-1, these 2 cups ran up to $10, which is just about the ballpark of Daily Scoop Udders and the usual gang of ice creameries.
Beyond the pricing, the ice cream was also not compelling enough for me to remember details about it, much more to convince me of making it a regular haunt. As an avid sesame ice cream kinda guy, their sesame had a well roasted profile without being overtly sweet, but that’s about it really nothing to shout about over here. The chocolate wasn’t the usual dark, strong and aggressive tasting kind that is overpoweringly sweet, which is a welcome exchange as it was subtle and tasty. The other two was alright.
Perhaps I don’t have the tongue for them artisanal homemade gelato things, but in my opinion for the pricing the desserts were okay.

What a peculiar dish, probably the first time I’ve tasted notes of spiciness in a pasta that as other Burpplers have pointed out, is reminiscent to the kick of the Mala spice. And to be frank, that isn’t a bad thing at all, the flavour actually compliments your usual prawn aglio olio. The shape of the pasta, coupled with the crunchiness of the tiny tobiko pearls, gives it such a fun bite. This dish is unconventional and doesn’t break the bank, at only $18 with Beyond 1-for-1 making it just $9 a pop, it is certainly worth a try.

For real tho, this was a solid steal, after the discount it was merely $8 with no service and gst charge (if I recall correctly). Was fairly sceptical initially as Le Coq is located in the nest of degen city, where CBD warriors waste away their long days with alcohol. How can a bar type bistro serve up good food?? Quite so pleasantly surprised, chicken was tender and delicious, skin is crispy and not overtly glazed up with oil. The quinoa substituting mainstream chicken rice was a welcome addition and them tamagoes completed this meal in its entirety. This was pretty damn filling, and I was certainly satisfied especially considering the price point I was paying. For sure I’m coming back, one of those places that doesn’t skimp on their ingredients just because they’re on Burpple Beyond so I can respect that.

Yet another bbtea enters the foray, but with the Burpple 1-for-1 is a solid deal all around. Interesting tidbit, this isn’t a franchise hailing from China or Taiwan but actually homegrown from our humble abode, which is admirable to say the least. The pearls have a delectable bite texture and gives you quite a pleasant chew springiness, the milk tea isn’t overpoweringly sweet and the flavour doesn’t jelat you out despite the 700ml contents. Good stuff, for sure will get if I’m around the area
