For example, prawns represent laughter due to their shape, sesame seed chicken for fertility (get it? 😜), scallops for prosperity, dumplings as their shape harks back to when they resemble ingots of gold and silver, fish because in Chinese, it sounds like abundance and so on and so forth. You get the picture.
So yesterday I went all out and made pretty much all of this and more... but the best part of it was hearing the chitter chatter, corks popping and happy full belly sighs and the general laughter and the smiling faces of my guests, my friends, my family. They are in fact one and the same for me, once you are in my tribe, you are in. And I for one am grateful for my rather large and colourful tribe.
And so on this, the 7th day of the #ChineseNewYear, aka Ren Ri or the birth of mankind, aka everybody’s birthday, I celebrate you!!! The Stats this year:
74 guests (including 14 small people)
75 spring rolls
120 (I think) crab rangoon
330 #dumplings of which there are were:
- pork and chive
- chicken momo
- veggie
- Xiaolongbao
4.5kgs of roast pork aka siew yuk
3kgs of braised pork belly
4kgs of charsiu
3kgs of braised beef shin
2.5kgs of sesame chicken
2kgs of prawns
2kgs of scallops
1kg of nuo mi fan aka fried sticky rice
60 leaf buns for the pork belly
1kg homemade kimchi (cabbage & cucumber)
A massive mandarin cake plus 5 baby ones
5 bottles of wine, 10 of bubbly including 2 magnums kindly and ably sabred by @katherinecameron_ , not counting the beer though empties of Alipus (thanks @mokococktail), Herradura (thanks Julio), Los Danzantes (thanks @aroundtheworldin.80.cocktails), Sipsmith Gin, Monkey 47 Sloe Gin, a bottle of sake as well as some very good dents in a few other bottles of #gin and #rum!) Viv over and out!

for other people, #meditation works, for me, time spent in the kitchen suits me best.
One do the many reasons I cook is that I am always striving to feed the #SmallPeople well. They are partial to buns of all sorts but I find the commercial ones too sweet and break easily. Here I combined stoneground whole wheat bread flour with all purpose. They are still soft and fluffy and have a much nicer texture than store bought. This time we had some kalbi marinated flank steak. With a few slices of crunchy cucumber and lashings of #Kewpie #mayonnaise, down the hatch they went! (P.S. they will eat these for breakfast, lunch and dinner!) •
