Take a spoonful of happiness, a dollop of joy. That’s what ice cream tastes like. Pure sweet bliss.

Dopa Dopa Creamery is named after dopamine, which is known as the chemical hormone that gives us pleasure. Their ice cream is unique and different from other ice cream parlours in Singapore as it’s one of the few I’ve seen (apart from Venchi) that stores their ice cream in metal containers, which are known as pozzeti that help the ice cream stay fresh. That’s how you spot real good gelato in Italy, and I have to say, the sweet treats at Dopa Dopa are the closest I’ve had in Singapore to authentic Italian gelato 🍨

Their ice cream is a tad pricey though, at $4 for a single flavour and an additional $0.70 for premium flavours like Pistachio (which is what I had), or other popular flavours like Hojicha and Green Tea Toasted Rice. Still, the ice cream was deliciously smooth and creamy, and tasted like pure pistachio butter. It’s a subtle light brown colour and not bright lurid green, which is how you know that Dopa Dopa is the REAL DEAL, making their ice cream with natural ingredients and no artificial colouring 💚

Is it “bingsoo” or “bingsu”? I always get confused 😛

I tried the Matcha Bingsu (Regular $11.90, Large $14.90) at Nunsaram Korean Dessert Cafe. I ordered the Regular, but was a little disappointed because it was much smaller than what I had seen on the pictures of other Burpple reviews (I suppose other Burpplers are not as stingy as me and ordered the Large, lol😅). For $11.90, I think it’s a little not worth it, considering the size.

However, the shaved ice is pretty fine, and I liked that the matcha flavour was quite distinct (there was a second layer of matcha powder hidden beneath, so it’s not all plain ice). The Bingsu was topped with sweet red bean paste, two small chunks of rice cake, and a matcha ice cream (which tasted kind of like cheap green tea ice cream). Overall, it’s a decent bingsu, just not the best.

The ice cream has the most wonderful texture; it’s silky smooth, rich and creamy, almost like gelato! Just look at those swirls of pistachio intermingled with coffee... My only complaint? The $4 cup is pretty small and the ice cream is so delicious that you finish it in no time and wish there was more!

Got another cup of white chocolate nori and pistachio ice cream for $4. The white chocolate nori was SURPRISINGLY good. It was sweet, salty and nutty—all rolled into one. It’s a unique flavour you definitely must try at Tom’s Palette.

Despite the slightly ulu location in Shaw Towers, there was a substantially large crowd at Tom’s Palette when I visited it on a weekday afternoon! Truly a hidden gem 😋

You can get your ice cream with a cone, waffle, brownie waffle, but I settled for the small $4 cup. You can choose 1-2 flavours per cup, and I got pistachio and coffee. I liked that the pistachio was a light brown colour, and not the lurid garish green shade you usually get in gelato parlours (indicative of artificial food colouring and flavourings added). However, the pistachio flavour was quite mild and not as nutty I would have liked. Coffee was actually the stronger of the two, and was a good blend of bittersweet.

Tom’s Palette has a rotation of 20+ ice cream flavours everyday, including the weird, wacky and wonderful like Ang Moh Carrot Cake Ice Cream, Salted Egg Ice Cream, Pipagao Ice Cream and more! Hahaha I think I would be open to trying a Singaporean Carrot Cake (the fried black/white hawker carrot cake) ice cream too!
