Best Places: Burnt Cheesecakes

TXA refers to its burnt cheesecakes as the Tarta De Queso “La Vina” ($6), and it comes with a slightly airy, creamy centre and a caramelised crust. They also have Pandan, Matcha and Earl Grey variants at $8.50 each. Burppler SG On Foot says, "In a way or another, there is no need to fly all the way to Spain to know why the cheesecake is so famous."

Whether it's sourdough, sundried tomato buns, or flavoured cruffins, this homely bakery at Empress Road always nails it. So why wouldn't their Basque Burnt Cheesecake ($7.30) be delicious as well? Baked fresh daily with three types of cheeses, Burpple Ong says it "has a caramelised sweetness with a glorious gooey middle. Too good to resist but it's definitely worth the calories."

We thought it's weird for a chicken and burger place to do great cheesecakes, but the testimonials from our Burpplers say it all. The Burnt Cheesecake ($6) comes as part of the restaurant's revival in the local F&B scene, and is "much to die-for", according to Burppler Xing Wei. Burppler Wuu Yyiizzhhoouu says "it's got the texture of a basque burnt but the taste of a classic NY. If you love NY, you're gonna love this."

The burnt cheesecake ($22 for two small tarts) at Esquina is more tart than cake, but we love it anyway. Think a crisp crust holding together a slightly burnt crown and soft, melty filling. Burppler Cafehoppingkids says "the cheese flavour was slightly more pungent and less complex, probably given the higher ratio of blue cheese."

Arguably the first restaurant in Singapore to popularise this yummy treat, Olivia does an amazing version ($14) that's nicely toasted on top with a very creamy centre. Burpler nic x says this cheesecake has "a multidimensional cheese filling: slightly sweet at first before the salty flavour kicks in, while a hint of blue cheese creeps up."

This little hole in the wall bakery does an impressive take on the burnt cheesecake, which they make with four types of cheeses. A hot favourite is the Two Face ($8) which combines the original and nutty matcha flavours. You can also try tea-inspired versions like the Seashore ($8.50), with Earl Grey and citrus fragrance, and mildly salty notes.

This pretty cafe at Pasir Panjang has gone through many renditions for their burnt cheesecakes, but we think they've finally found the one. Many people have been raving about the Hojicha Burnt Cheesecake ($8.50), and as Burppler Zul Latiff describes, "I've never been a fan of cheesecake really, but The Kins' burnt cheesecake (both the original and this) converted me just like THAT."

The entire restaurant pulls its inspiration from Basque Country, so no surprise that you'll find a Basque-style burnt cheesecake here. Each slice goes for $16 but you can also get a whole cake at $78. Baked with both cream cheese and native Idiazabal cheese, the result is sublime, "so sublime I didn't want to share it", says Burppler Veronica Phua.
