Mee Hoon Kueh

Mee Hoon Kueh

Well I once ate meehoonkueh 5 days in a row so it deserves a folder of its own :)

Another amazing bowl of mhk! The hand torn mhk pieces were chewy with varying thickness - some parts were stretched more thinly due to the pulling and tearing process. Very very good texture, comparable to ah yi’s mhk at marsiling mall. The soup was comforting and the egg whites floating around is a good touch. Minced meat was decent. They use mani cai!! There are peppery lean chicken strips in the soup which is strange, they’re fine but I’m okay without it.

Tried their banmian before as they were sold out of mhk in the evening and it was not bad too, but definitely get the mhk if you do visit! My favourite is still ah yi but this stall’s mhk pieces are a very close second.

Their mhk is thinner and slurpier, not the thicker kinds, but wasn’t soggy. Kinda has a similar style of mhk pieces as bossi ban mian at sgoon gardens. But here they serve superrrr big pieces, kinda hard to eat actually because it can’t fit on the spoon 😂 This had mani cai + xiaobaicai, and 2 pieces of beancurd skin. Ikan bilis here is a touch more crisp and salty than most. Shallot was also more crisp, but this I liked. They give rousui, but I didn’t really like it. It also came with 2 meatballs, the kind u see in bcm/pho. A raw egg is cracked into soup, but the whites couldn't get cooked enough bc the bowl had a large surface area and the amoy fans cooled down the soup too quickly. Very generous portion, was super full! Soup is the less rich / more clear type, similar to grandma banmian at level 1. Overall, this was decent but there’s better mhk in amoy!

The mhk was chewy and not doughy, liked it! It’s hand torn, which I like bc it gives textural variation to the mhk. Broth was tasty, there was a wokhei taste?? The basic version is $3.50, signature version comes with meatball, pork slices, and prawn ball which means it’s $0.50 per add-on. Pork slices were tender, meatball was alright but nothing to shout about, prawn ball was crunchy. The veg here was spinach I think. Would come back for the basic version as that’s enough to satisfy me!

Broth is rich (not the clear type), mhk is not hand torn but cut bc its even & uniform. Kinda like mdm leong's at amoy also! It’s slurpy and thin, q al dente and very smooth and slidey. They crack a raw egg into the bowl, so there’s a runny yolk! Veg here is spinach, but wasn’t a lot. The minced meat was alright but not particularly great. Ikan wasn't too salty. A good bowl of mhk, but those who prefer the chunkier kind would not prefer this!

There were some mhk pieces which were really nice, with a qq texture, but it wasn’t very consistent. Some pieces lacked that qq texture. They’re generous with the tender pork slices and tasty meatballs though, and the fried shallots brought fragrance to the bowl of mhk. I do prefer ah yi’s (the stall in the next row) mhk as it has better texture and consistency. Nonetheless, this is still a pretty good bowl of mhk!

The hand torn mee hoon kueh was alright (not doughy), though it lacked springiness as it was rather thin. Meatballs were well-seasoned, and I liked that there was mani cai in this (the hallmark of more authentic mhks). There were also mushrooms and ikan bilis, plus an onsen egg which is something different. A decent bowl, but not the best.

Wow! I was thoroughly impressed with this bowl of mee hoon kueh, it was so delicious! The mhk pieces were chewy and bouncy, and not doughy at all; the soup was flavourful but light; minced meat was well-seasoned; and the crisp ikan bilis + fried shallots provided a good crunch & fragrance. Will definitely return for this - I think it’s one of the best mhk I’ve had :)

This had a long queue, and is pretty affordable! However, wasn’t too impressed by the mhk. It was too thick for my liking. While it was chewy, it was quite doughy :( I did like the soup though!

Was excited to try this, but it fell short of expectations. It was average at best, and nothing stood out. The mee hoon kway wasn’t clumpy, but it didn’t have that delicious handmade quality, and was a little too thin for my liking. Might go for the soup version next time, hopefully it’s better!

Have been patronising this stall for years and have always ordered the kekoumian, but I decided to try the mee hoon kueh that day instead. It looked hand torn, and it wasn’t doughy! Not the best though. It’s served in the same broth as the kekoumian - not too salty, light, but flavourful. The broth is the star of the bowl. Comes with veg (there is a lot in my bowl because my friend gave me all of her veg), minced meat and an add-on egg.
