When it’s a chill Saturday and you live to eat, Dad decides he wants to drive down to our former hood: Thomson. We had his chicken rice but I also got to visit this new bakery at Springleaf that made my weekend.
What started with just 2 pastries turned into a takeaway bag of 8 pastries, I blame our Chinese excessive roots but am unapologetic about it. My Pain au Chocolat Orange and Kouign Aman were nicely layered and delicious. I also had the sesame flavoured Kouign Aman which worked very well- I’d say the Croissants are standard fare so go for the flavoured Pain and pastries.
The only thing I’d not order again would be the Chausson Au Pommes, you don’t find this much in French bakeries around our little red dot but the version here was greasy and too flakily stiff. Not dismissing that it was made with good ingredients I’d stick with the nice layers in the other bakes.

Had the MSW mousse and Mango Pomelo Sago, together with 2 cups of Orange juice. As part of the Burpple deal, total was only $10.

MSW Mousse was the star dessert here, very creamy and not overly sweet. Taste of durian permeated through the air, through my mouth, and through to my heart. Look at that huge chunk of durian flesh too... So good!! Mango Pomelo Sago was decent as well. Highly recc this quaint and cosy place.

Celine's Gelato Cart doesn't sell from a cart anymore, and they have a permanent stall in Novena Regency! However, there is still a makeshift cart in the stall from which they serve their ice creams from. 😋

We ordered the waffle + pistachio ice cream, which was a little pricey as the combo costs $11! The waffle was great because it was really crispy on the outside and yet it was soft and fluffy on the inside. The shop gives you a vial of maple syrup, which pairs pretty well with the waffle and infuses it with some sweetness!

Although the pistachio ice cream is supposed to be a chef's recommendation, we felt it was a little too light and it could have been more nutty. :( Also, don't pour the maple syrup over your pistachio ice cream since the ice cream is lightly-flavoured and you will end up tasting only maple syrup.

We are excited to try out their other flavours though and we may pop by again if we are in the area!

Just a note to fellow Burpple users: the tart set deal (1 for 1) is for dine-in only. I tried to takeaway the tart set today (9 Jan) but was rejected by the staff as it is for dine in only. Upsetting as I specially made my way down to this cafe just to redeem this deal but had to pay full price. I don’t see the difference between dining in and taking away, it is not as though the tarts will be specially plated? Further, with the current dine-in restrictions of 5 pax, who is going to buy 6 tarts for dine in? Very unrealistic and I won’t be coming back again.

Was expecting the chocolate version but was served the seasonal fruit Hi tea. Enjoyed the drinks and food. And service was superb but time was too short. Would give 5/5 if it was 2 hours instead of 90 mins

Been following them since their homebaker days nearby and watch them expand! REALLT impressed with the colors and assorted flavors - super perfect as a gift!🎉 and with Burpple affordable to try!

Have always been wanting to try Nicher’s bakes but it’s not the easiest spot to get to — so jumped on the opportunity to visit them when they have announced the opening of their new premises at The Brooks I which is within walking distance from Springleaf MRT Station and Springleaf Nature Park. The space gives off very minimalist Japanese vibes with its wooden counters and furnishings, with an interior that largely features white and grey elements. A small dine-in area is available here around the counter in the form of bench seats for two, with a table slotted in the middle.

We made our visit quite early in the day so the only bakes available was the Kouign Amann — was being told by them that most of the bakes will be available in the late morning — that includes their Classic Croissant, Raisin Croissant, Chocolate Croissant and Almond Croissant (including a variant that chocolate in a form of Pain au Chocolat — sounds fairly interesting). I liked how the Kouign Amann here comes in a pretty cute size — smaller than the usual, but is probably one of the variants that I really quite liked where the layering within was very defined; crusty on the exterior from the sugar crystals that wasn’t overly sweet, but also carrying a firm bite. There is a distinct waft of buttery note within the pastry that strikes a good balance of sweetness and saltishness for the Kouign Amann — works great especially with the Iced Filtered Coffee which features beans roasted by Nylon Coffee Roasters that comes with a medium body with a fruity and earthy flavour profile.

Nicher Bakery at Seng Poh Road has always been better known for their artisanal loaf cakes, scones and muffins, but it is interesting how their outlet at Springleaf seems to be more focused on French viennoiseries. I have yet to try any other creations from Nicher prior to this, but I must say that I am pretty impressed with how there are such stellar French viennoiseries to be found in this part of the island. With the Thomson-East Coast Line bringing convenience to reach this part of the island, it’s needless to say that Nicher is probably one of the those places I would find myself visiting for croissants and hand-brewed coffee to start my day — especially since they do open at 9am on Saturdays here.
