Old Hen Coffee Bar has expanded, with a new concept just down the street called Old Hen Kitchen that focuses more on brunch options. The new space is significantly larger, and you have the option of pulling up a seat at the counter to watch them work their magic. We're so glad they've brought over their popular cold brews and espresso-based coffees, with the addition of Japanese tea from Ippudo Tea Co, all great to sip on as you catch up with your friends. Share a side of Chili Crab Fries ($12) while you do so — it's saucy with pronounced bits of crab meat, and has a spicy kick! For mains, try the Salmon Soba ($19) — buckwheat noodles tossed in a citrus teriyaki sauce, topped with sous vide salmon, carrots, edamame and a sprinkle of ikura. Pro tip: Watch out for their newly launched cold brews like the Cold Matcha Milk and seasonal offerings like the Cold Peppermint Chocolate!

Lamingtons are a hard find in Singapore — more so a good one. A cake with Australian origins, Lamingtons are sponge cake that traditionally comes with a layer of chocolate coated on the exterior while coming with a good amount of desiccated coconut sprinkled over the top. The Lokal serves two variants today — the traditional chocolate one as well as this Matcha variant. Carrying a rather light whiff of matcha aroma, cutting it apart reveals a vanilla sponge which is light and fluffy while accompanying it is the strong coconut aroma that sets the Lamington apart from a usual sponge cake. Would have to try even more Lamingtons to see how they are generally like but I am definitely pretty satisfied with this version.

The curried cauliflower was crisp and light, while the madras curry yoghurt really brought out the best flavors. A must order dish!

The Matcha Project opens its doors today at The Sail — a grab-and-go coffee and tea bar with a focus on their own matcha products including powders which are for retail.

Named "military" because of its colour (oh I dread ...), this is a concoction which sees Matcha, Milk and Chocolate sauce comes as one. I like how the soothing bitterness of matcha kind of compensates for the sweetness of the chocolate sauce at the start, though once everything starts fused up together the flavours start to get a little messy — more of an acquired taste I feel. If this sounds a little too gimmicky and as though it's just for the #gram, they do have regular hot and cold drinks with or without milk featuring Matcha, Genmaicha and Houjicha alongside espresso-based coffee as well.

I like how the desserts here are served in a small cup portion, perfect for sharing even after a filling meal. My favorite out of the 5 that we tried is the Mango Sticky Rice (foreground right)! Mango puree, pandan sticky rice, coconut cream and lastly topped with a scoop of coconut ice cream. I absolutely love the fragrant and soft pandan sticky rice! With a little of the puree and light coconut cream and ice-cream, it was love at first bite! Also, the sweet potato (background centre) was also very well received with the sweetness complementing the milky coconut shaved ice perfectly!

Situated across from Novena Church, this famous pancake chain from Japan is known for its healthier pancakes. These are made using their signature Kyushu Pancake flour base — a combination of seven different Kyushu-grown grains. Bring your girlfriends to share the Sample Platter ($15), which comes with pancakes, waffles and French toast — perfect for trying a bit of everything. For something heartier, go for the American Big Breakfast ($22) — the full works with their famed pancakes is bound to fill you up. End with something sweet like the Matcha MontBlanc ($18) — a stack of pancakes served with yummy matcha chestnut sauce, matcha mousse and vanilla ice cream! Pro tip: Make reservations if you're coming on a weekend.

One of the desserts at last night's invited tasting at Riverside Grilled Fish restaurant was this poetically beautiful cold rice cake. Shaped as a snowy white fish, it came "swimming" in a shallow pool of gula melaka. Yes, it felt almost criminal to cut it up for eating but we did because after all the spicy dishes, our tastebuds were in need of some cool, smooth and soothing comfort.

There is no flour used in the otah paste, which is made with scallops, coral (scallop roe), wings and spices. The paste is then spread on a kale leaf and steamed. The resulting otah is tasty yet not overly spicy, and has chunks of scallop and wings in them. Some might think it's slightly overindulgent for otah, but I love it and the thought that went into it.

From Atlas Coffeehouse situated at 6 Duke's Road by the people behind Assembly Coffee. Described as "Glazed Salmon, Soba Noodles, Fried Egg" on the menu, this was a Japanese-inspired dish that replicates pasta. Buckwheat Noodles tossed with a hint of Nori flavour, the noodles were done al-dente while the salmon was well-marinated and carried a savoury, strong grilled flavour though the skin could be perhaps crispier for better texture. What surprised me was the fried egg though; totally crisp on the underside for the white which made it pretty intriguing!

I have had baked cheeses before but this encrusted-with-crunchiness and warm-and-gooey-on-the-inside Brie was something else. Served on a slice of soft black bread, the creamy mildness of the cheese paired really well with the accompanying sweet berries sauce. I recommend ordering it to share among 3 to 4 persons so you'll still have ample tummy space for the main courses.
