Had this quite a few times when I was younger, but I can’t remember if the pastry skin always had this strong margarine flavour, or if my tastebuds have changed. It tasted very traditional because of the margarine, but I don't like margarine lol. Skin texture is nice tho - slightly crispy, very flaky outers. Filling to skin ratio is like 2:1? Doesn’t get cloying, very easy to eat.

With sesame seeds = sweet. The filling was like lotus paste. Paste is quite smooth!

Without sesame seeds = salty. The mung bean filling had a slight saltiness, but it’s not super salty, just more savoury in comparison to the sweet paste.

I think I like the salty one slightly more!

Texture was akin to the typical pastey sweet tsp but it was salty instead. Crust was thin, crisp and very buttery. I love my sandy salty tsp w shallot’s fragrance but this was good too and v moreish. No wonder it’s many people’s fav tsp in sg.

If you’re lucky to get a table and not be deterred by the long queues, this retro spot will transport you back to olden days Singapore. Got their sweet tau sar piah which just came out of the oven piping hot and a slide of their old school traditional butter cake.

💸: $0.90

💬: I'm on team sweet for this one, but trust me and eat it the moment you get it, or at least within the first few hours because that's when it is at its prime flavour & texture- buttery, mildly sweet, flakey and oh so deligious

People say this may be the best Tau Sar Piah, and I dare say its the best I've eaten so far. The sweet or salty ones ($0.90 each) are beautifully flaky and crispy, with a flavourful and aromatic filling in the middle. One bite and you know its above the rest. Definitely worth a try!
