From the Burpple community

Included on each cup of Mad Roaster’s lattes and espresso-based coffees, is a story and a customised coloured logo by the refugees community they aim to support. I don’t take coffee, so I went for this Iced Matcha Latte! It was lovely, lightly sweetened (you can also ask for less), had distinct matcha notes and not at all too milky. You can also request to swap for oat milk at $1! The hot goes for $3.

Took leave and went on our own mini food trail yesterday. One of our stops was the new Mad Roaster that sits on the 2nd floor of Amoy Food Centre. Included on each cup of their lattes and espresso-based coffees, is a story and a customised coloured logo by the refugees community they aim to support. The matcha latte was a lovely cup that you can request for less sweet, or top up to swap for oat milk.

On top of these drinks, they also serve freshly made brioche on rotation. It was the Chocolate Babka’s turn yesterday and what a delight it was. If you’re having it there, it’s served warm with a spread of custard and topped with crunchy salted-chocolate crumbles - had a crisp exterior and chocolatey fluffy centre that was sweetened just right! Our slice was thinner than usual, so the kind owners offered us two instead. Can’t wait to head back to catch the original and cinnamon brioche!

If you are looking for good affordable coffee in the CBD, drop by the @madroaster at Amoy Food Centre!

Their coffee starts at $2.80 for an Americano and $3.80 for a Flat White! My order of Iced Oat Milk Flat White ($5.30) was pretty good, love the nice roasted notes of the coffee.

The more interesting drink on the menu would be the Honey Butter Latte ($4).

Every cup of coffee comes with the backstory of the person you have helped that have designed the logo! Read their story at the back of the coffee sleeve 👍

Stalls dedicated to serving up specialty coffee in Hawker centres are not a common find, but Mad Roaster is definitely not the first either — The Hangar Coffee Express at Maxwell Food Centre and Danger Close Beverage Company at Alexandra Village Food Centre also happen to be serving the same. That being said, Mad Roaster is probably the most cafe-like establishment thus far, focusing on serving up just a small variety of espresso-based coffee and brioche.

Some may argue that this is probably the start of gentrification of coffee stalls at hawker centres — I find this a welcome and bold move in bringing espresso-based coffee to the masses whilst keeping prices affordable; very well suited for the demographics here given the office folks that patronise Amoy Street Food Centre. The “Brioche of the Day” turns out to be this Chocolate Babka — sold in slices for just $2, this is absolutely comforting; soft, fluffy slice of bread with chocolate swirls that is slathered with butter and topped with chocolate crumbles which is absolutely delightful being a combination of sweet and savoury. The Flat White (though I would guess that most folks would be trying out their Honey Butter Latte) is also pretty good here; smooth and creamy with a fruity note and a light body — sufficient as a morning perk-me-up without being too acidic.

Freshly baked Chocolate Babka and delicious coffees aside, there is an element of being a social enterprise featuring the art of a refugee in the creation of the logo, and telling of the refugee’s story on the cups as awareness. Definitely a meaningful spot to visit for a comforting slice of bread and coffee that I would love to revisit again!

Chocolate Babka - thoroughly impressed us with its luscious dark chocolate swirls and laminated buttery layers.
