Long before there were these chicken rice darlings made famous by bloggers and the internet, Margaret Drive was already a well known brand in Singapore, along with Swee Kee and others.
I am pleased to report that not only the stall has survived all these year, it is still thriving (although it has now moved to a Kopitiam in Holland Drive), judging from the long queue of customers.
Ordered drumstick rice and added chicken gizzard. Total $6.50. Not the cheapest.
The rice I noticed was coming from a new pot freshly cooked. Perhaps thatās why it was a bit soggy. Chicken rice needs to be aired after cooking and stirred to release the water vapours. Flavour wise, it was good.
The chicken was tender and succulent. They are still not doing the deboning thoroughly like some of these new boneless chicken rice stalls, so you get pieces of the thigh bone still attached. But this also means you get more of the meat. The gizzards were sliced thinly and very crunchy.
Chilli sauce was piquant and spicy. Add a drizzle of the ginger purƩe provided and you have a one of the best condiments you can find in Singapore, with savoury and spicy, flavour and taste well balanced.
By the time I left, the queue got even longer. Perhaps signs that I have a good chance to eat this chicken rice for more years to come?

I can't believe the number of good reviews they have. Either they had a bad day or the standards really nosedived
The sauce was ridiculously salty and didn't have much umami
The ckn was dry and tough. It's average but at this price, average is not good enough
Portion was good though, and generous amounts of cucumber, that are nicely cut(into quarters, much easier to eat than batons)
Sin Kee Chicken Rice is known for providing tender and succulent meat. I still remember the times when I had it in Margaret drive, we were so amazed by the layer of translucent jelly collagen under the skin of the chicken.
Their chilli sauce was homemade, likewise for the grated ginger that goes very well with the poached chicken too.
Bean sprouts were well blanched and tossed in light sauce together with cut chillis as well as coriander. They compliment each other well and are perfect to pair with the plate of fragrant chicken rice,
After visiting the Sin Kee stalls, I'm glad that the standard has been consistent. Be early to avoid queue if you want to enjoy some pocket-friendly chicken rice.
My childhood chicken rice!! Also my favourite chicken rice. I havenāt had it in a while and Iām so happy to know that it is still pretty damn good. The piping hot rice was flavourful & fragrant, but isnāt very oily. I love it, even though the rice grains are broken up (I wonder if it would be nicer if the rice grains were whole, possibly making the rice more fluffy? But then again shouldnāt fix whatās not broken š).
Chicken was tender and soft and succulent throughout - even for the chicken breast! The oily soya sauce underneath the chicken is super good, a bit salty but very tasty. The chicken is cold btw, I think they use an ice bath to stop residual heat from further cooking the chicken. I usually donāt eat chicken skins bc itās mostly quite meh + unhealthy, but for this itās rly quite nice and worth the calories. Thereās the gelatinous bits under the skin that my bf likes! Iām okayish with it :x Veg was p standard, crunchy and comes with oyster sauce.
Ginger sauce is the watery sort, with minced ginger bits. It gives a nice gingery heat / spice, but idk why it was so much saltier than before. I didnāt have the chili but my bf says it wasnāt v satisfying.
Have been eating this when it was called sin kee during its margaret drive days, when it shifted to mei ling market, and at its present Holland drive location (it shifted stall units within the same coffee shop) and I think it remained consistently goood. Even tho I might be biased because itās my childhood chicken rice, Iām pretty sure itās objectively good (Michelin bib gourmand leh!!) :p
