I love the slightly sweet taste to the fries and the fries were freshly fried.

I’ve never tasted frites this good when I lived in the Benelux. The fries are crispy on the outside and soft inside; the sprinkled seasonings are addictive. Prices are outrageous for a portion of frites. I guess otherwise how can they survive with a very short menu (with, therefore, limited appeal) and at least 3 full-time staff in the tiny kitchen (including the Dutch owner who just punched the cash machine).

The crispiness was tested when I ordered a takeaway small with special sauce ($6.50), which is a mixture of their frites and kerrie sauces.

The staff were really helpful to ensure that the taste and texture of snack were preserved after knowing that I am bringing them home which would require 30 minutes. The sauces were packed separately and the potatoes were carefully wrapped in a large piece of paper.

After 30-40 minutes, the fries are still really good. Stuffed with wholesome potatoes like wedges and still has the crisp of shoe string fries. The special sauce was amazing! A mix of mayonaise and european curry sauce that was creamy, sweet, tomato sour with a hint of curry spices. The chopped onions were a wonderful addition that enhances the taste of the mayo and curry.


Not too long ago we decided to try the award-winning (apparently) Dutch french fries from Holland which opened in the second half of 2018 at Holland Piazza in Holland Village.

Found the menu hard to understand and the staff wasn’t very good at explaining the various sauces.

Personally, I think there are too many sauces to choose from and it’s hard to figure out what flavour each sauce is, when it isn’t very self-explanatory (e.g. the Kerrie sauce).

You’ll have to make a guess or read reviews online to figure it out. (Kerrie sauce is apparently kind of like BBQ sauce but more sweet and tangy.)

I decided to go with the frites sauce with tomato and basil. It’s basically sour cream with salsa on thick cut fries made from Holland potatoes. The salsa is nice, but to me good salsa is readily available (e.g. at most Mexican food establishments).

Price-wise, I think it’s rather expensive for loaded fries. But they do have a 2 for $10 promotion on their small fries with onion and frite sauce which might be a tastier combo and probably more value-for-money!

Ambience is so-so, there is a really strong outdoor air-conditioner/fan type of machine. The outdoor seating is on a slope covered with fake grass. The whole atmosphere feels.. like a staged replica of a European beer garden or outdoor area of a pub. There is also a lot of sun even though there is some shade provided by the outdoor patio umbrella.

Would I come here again? Probably not as I wasn’t very impressed by the Dutch fries and not something I would crave. Felt like it was missing something, maybe we chose the wrong sauce and onions would’ve been a better match with fries? Anyway McDonald’s french fries or KFC’s cheese fries are good enough for me and definitely less messy!

Small one is good to share for two as a snack after a meal. Like how it’s part crispy and part soggy from the sauce. Good frites made from good potatoes, worth trying!

Thick-cut Patat Frites with a mixture of Frites Sauce and Kerrie Sauce with Onions.

Being widely recognised as the No. 1 frites in Netherlands for 8 years in a row, @martinzwertssingapore finally opens its first flagship store at Holland Village since late April this year. All their potatoes, sauces and even equipment are imported directly from Holland!

I like how the fries still had that slight crunch despite being drenched in that flavourful sauce for as long as it had. You can actually opt for the sauce to be separated if you don’t want your fries to turn soggy.
