News had gotten around about the McDonald’s new limited time-only offering which they had launched in conjunction with the National Day celebrations this year — we had been pretty stoked since the various media outlets were posting about it; after all, the Nasi Lemak Burger is probably one of our favourite limited time-only offerings during this season. In this year’s rendition of the Nasi Lemak Burger, McDonald’s have claimed that the item comes with a new and improved recipe from the last rendition — for those whom are looking to have the Nasi Lemak Burger as well as all the limited time-only offerings for this season to come alongside with it, the Nasi Lemak Burger Feast is the one to go for. The Nasi Lemak Burger Feast sees the Nasi Lemak Burger being paired with Potato Wedges, the Cocoa-nut Pie (which we had written about some time back), and small Coke Zero that one can swop with any other beverages available at the outlet, and at a top-up if need be.

There really isn’t much that is changed with the Nasi Lemak Burger that is served up this time round in terms of its composition — the burger still comes with that all-familiar semolina bun, a fried chicken patty, fried egg, onions, cucumbers and sambal; the only change that most seemed to have mentioned would be on the fried chicken patty itself. Taking a bite into the Nasi Lemak Burger, there is no denying in how the Nasi Lemak Burger replicates the dish that it is intended to mirror — the familiar sweet-ish and savoury notes of the sambal comes through and compliments the other elements such as the onions, cucumbers and the fried chicken patty perfectly. The sambal also came with a lightly spicy kick; nothing too fiery, though definitely quite evident. We recalled that there was a slight hint of coconut milk-richness coming within the fried chicken patty in the last rendition of the Nasi Lemak Burger, creating that Lemak feel — something which we felt was pretty genius and still baffles us even when we think about it today; the fried chicken patty that comes with the Nasi Lemak Burger now definitely comes with a crispier patty than the last rendition while the “Lemak” factor had also increased in this one. The Semolina Bun’s fluffiness, soft fried egg that is almost akin to the ones served with the Breakfast McMuffin, crunch of the cucumber slices and soft bite of the fried onions all came together well with the crispness of the fried chicken patty. Needless to say, this current rendition of the Nasi Lemak Burger is certainly a slight notch above the previous — still one of our favourite McDonald’s limited time-only creations during the National Day season!

Hadn’t have a McDonald’s limited run burger for quite a long while but the Jjang! Jjang! Chicken Burger is one burger that I was really looking forward to try ever since it was announced. The whole idea of the Jjang! Jjang! Chicken Burger also seemed like a pretty well-thought creation — fried chicken patty that is slathered with Korean spicy sauce; something which sounded really matching as compared against the Jjang! Jjang! Beef Burger that features the usual beef patty.

Had mine at the Suntec City Mall outlet and thought the Jjang! Jjang! Chicken Burger was one of the better limited edition runs that McDonald’s have had on their menu in recent times. There are a few who have mentioned that the sauce in the two Jjang! Jjang! Burgers are more spicy than sweet — I found that to be pretty consistent with my experience though I would say I liked it the way that they have tuned the sauce towards. The sauce starts off with a slight sweetness but comes with a fiery kick pretty soon after; a spiciness does come at a level that some who are tolerable to moderate levels of spiciness may find it a little hot, but it does up the shiok factor for me — so much that the burger didn’t feel jelak despite the pool of sauce that came at the bottom of the wrapper. In between the two buns, the burger also comes with lettuce and tomato in between. Mum, who tried a little bit of the sauce that came with the burger using a fry (she had dinner prior) likens it to that of a more subdued version of the Samyang spicy sauce — can’t really vouch for it since I am wimp who refuses to try it to spare my taste buds from the agony of doing so, but it does sound like a good reference point coming from someone who has a good appetite for spicy foods.

While I have not made a visit to McDonald’s for quite a while since most of their limited runs for their burger offerings have not caught my eyes, the Jjang! Jjang! Chicken Burger does not disappoint — taking all accounts that it is something put out by a commercial fast food joint; this was actually pretty satisfying and on-point to the theme and something actually worth commending. One of the burgers that I would actually look forward to seeing it make a return on the menu again after the current run is over!

And yes, the filling tasted like molten pokka peach tea, so this hits the sugar rush jackpot. 🍑

Okay, so McDonald’s Singapore finally launched their D24 Durian McFlurry, about three weeks after their Malaysian counterparts made it available.

The similarity of this cup of ice cream (S$4.00) is that there were real traces of durian in the durian sauce they used. Unfortunately, I somehow reckoned that the Singapore version tasted a bit too heavy on artificial sugars, hence the sweetness was a tad too distinct, also considering that the McFlurry would be undermixed most of the time. Good for a try, but nothing could replace the real King of Fruits no matter what.

Sweet Chilli Fish Burger Special ($8.60)
.
The once-a-month Macdonalds quota to try the new sweet chilli fish burger special and the much talked about chocolate pie ($1.40). I deserve to get shot for actually liking the super crispy crust of the fish patty but would have appreciated way more sauce cos what’s with mcdonalds and their constant stinge on their sauces? Once I actually went past the crust to the fish, it did taste a tad fishy but it was at an acceptable level. Overall, probably better off ordering the fish and fries so that you get 2 pieces of fish in place of 2 pieces of tasteless buns.
.
The chocolate pie was rich with thick chocolate and good as a once off dessert but I would not crave nor miss it now that it is gone. Nothing to wow about, just very chocolatey.
