Mercat’s greasy, meaty Catalan Breakfast (RM29) comes loaded with Spanish bacon, York ham, two eggs and Catalan white beans, and it might just be the cure to beat that hangover. Pile on more sides of chorizo (RM9) or jamon cocido (RM9) – you won’t regret the extra meat. Brunch is available every day till 4pm at this Bangsar outlet, which means you can sleep in and still get to enjoy this scrumptious plate.

The perfect hangover meal looks a lot like this greasy, meaty plate at Mercat. A very generous serving for one, the dish comes with bacon, two eggs (fried or scrambled), York ham and delicious Catalan white beans. Love the toast the most – it’s topped with fresh tomatoes (or tomato pulp?) and then toasted. Next time I’m getting this with extra chorizo!

Arroz Plancha consists of of the rice crust from a cast iron pan. The rice is cooked like a paella, but with the bottom bits served for that extra umami flavour and texture. The dish was served with potatoes and jamon iberico.

The rice was still creamy and flavourful from the prolonged cooking, ensuring a fluffy texture on the inside. The outer layer formed a crispy skin which enveloped the rice giving a nice mix of texture and charred flavours. The jamon and potatoes balanced the dish out with its starchiness and sharp acorn flavours. Please do request if this can be made as it is a dish of the day, which is quite a pity.

Pincho Moruno (Moruno skewers), are tapas consisting of thick cut pork belly slices, marinated with the Moroccan spice ras al hanout. As the south of Spain is tinged with North African and Middle Eastern Mediterranean flavours, this dish is a perfect blend of all that flavour.

The meat was perfectly cooked, with a nice juicy spicy flavourful bite. The spicy and piquant flavour did well for the thick slabs of perfectly grilled pork belly, leaving you wanting more. This was probably one of the best dishes on the menu, and comes highly recommended.

Mix De Embutidos Y Quesos (Mix of Meats and Cheese) is a cold cuts platter consisting of jamón ibérico, jamón serrano, salchichón iberico, chorizo ibérico, fuet, manchego, caña de cabra, ahumado and special cheese.

The selection of meat and cheese were unadulterated and flavourful, especially the jamón ibérico with its acorn flavour. The serrano was lean and crisp. The fuet, a Catalan dry cured sausage had a metallic flavour to it, which was interesting. The spanish manchego’s medium hard cheese was nice and firm, and the ahumado, a smoked cheese, was pungent. Of all the cheese, the caña de cabra, a goat cheese, stood out.

Be transported to Barcelona at Mercat, a gastrobar that relishes its distinct Spanish roots. Here is a perfect supper stopover after a couple of drinks with a group of friends. Dive into the Langosta Baby (RM24) that serves succulent baby lobsters in an aromatic lime foam. The piquant Esquiexada (RM24), Spanish cod in Catalonian salad, is also a fine choice, but the star here has to be the Fideua (RM44) — thin, fried noodle pasta cooked in a tasty seafood broth. If there's still room, slip in a "Gin & Tonic" On The Plate (RM26) to end the night with a luscious, jellied gin & tonic with ice cream.
