What you should order based on community favourites

From the Burpple community

Located on the first floor along Jalan Petaling, this vibrant cafe sees locals and tourists alike swing by for fresh twists on cafe dishes. The community-favourite is the Kai Fan 4.0 (RM24) which they upgrade often, so look forward to new versions in the future! Also good are the Hongkie Beef Stew (RM25) and Better Than Sex (RM20), a sweet dish featuring pandan roti jala with melted cheese, kaya toast-flavoured ice cream and gula Melaka.

Pandan roti jala with melted kaya ice cream and gula melaka sauce RM20

Grilled chicken chop with thai green curry sauce, served with rice, salsa and fried egg (RM24)

The name of the dessert wasn’t the reason I ordered it. Ok...maybe a teeny bit.

The combination of pandan roti jala, sweet kaya toast flavoured ice-cream and gula melaka sauce with salty melted cheese was intriguing. It was topped with slices of strawberry and almonds.

It wasn’t as sweet as I expected, probably due to the non-sweet roti jala and melted cheese. Altogether it was delicious.

I wish they made the roti jala in little rolls like how it usually is. This came in one thick piece and I had to cut it with a knife. And also, maybe a heavier pandan smell. I didn’t smell nor tasted the pandan much.

This is RM20. Best to share.

Kungpao Mantao [RM23]; Iced Organic Matcha Latte [RM15] ⁣

✨: Merchant's Lane is definitely a gem in the KL cafe scene, serving up palatable dishes in a charming space. ⁣

I was instantly reminded of Roller Coaster snacks of my childhood as soon as I tasted this dish. The smoky, peppery beef bacon was a great match with the crisp and fluffy mantao. The matcha latte, on the other hand, was accurately put by my friend @marsyakamarul as a liquified Matcha Kit Kat. ⁣

💬: Though I did enjoy the mantau, I wouldn't by any means call it Kungpao. I'd definitely rate it higher if it were just called a black pepper mantau 😂. The latte had good flavour, but it was slightly too sweet for my liking. ⁣

Nonetheless, the Saturday morning queue for a table at Merchant's Lane was definitely justified. Dining within its iconic old school interior and the hunt for its bright turquoise door is an experience unlike any other. ⁣

I had the South China Sea (RM27) which consists of a grilled salmon, 63C sous vide egg, salsa and rosti. Despite hearing the rave reviews about this place, I felt that my order was rather underwhelming as the grilled salmon was a tad too dry. For drinks, I had my standard dose of flat white (RM12) which was pretty up to standard. However, I did enjoy the ambience and the retro decor of this cafe.
