I tend to avoid “cai png” because you can almost always get food that’s just as affordable, prepared fresh and not dripping with oil within the same coffeeshop. Mix Box Cafe however does an acceptable version with a large variety of visually appealing dishes to choose from. I got the chicken cutlet which was well-seasoned and came topped with a sweetish sauce along with aromatic curry leaves. When i saw my primary school favourite of luncheon meat and potato I picked it straight away and had no regrets – meaty cubes of processed meat and soft potato will always be comfort food. Make sure to take generous heapfuls of the rich sambal and cut chilli in dark soy sauce which they provide at the side of the counter.

Well-cooked rice that went well with a generous portion of tender chicken chunks swimming in a lightly spicy and savoury sauce dotted with the crunch of diced onion and the zing of dried chilli. Surprisingly decent lunchtime tze char from an obscure canteen inside the 3rd floor carpark of AZ Building. Would visit again for the food, and also to take refuge from the unbearable heat of coffee shops in the area.
