Well, the description is slightly...misleading! At first look, "WOW! Such huge Oysters!" was my initial thought - only because I'd expected Oysters lightly coated in batter and thereafter, breaded and fried. That was.. not the case. It's actually oyster croquette (?). I suppose minced oysters went into the batter in the making of the croquette. Slightly disappointing as I'd expected to bite into a fat, juice whole oyster enclosed within. All in all, personal expectations aside, the croquette was pretty decent - kudos to the home-made mayo-like dip with sesame bits!

Freshness is the key to a good Salmon don cos any fishyness would kill it all. I'm proud to announce that it's all freshness within this bowl! Lightly seared and topped with mentaiko, the salmon was really silky smooth - felt like it could glide down my throat without any serious chewing. 'Topped with bright orangey roe for the slight 'poppy' texture.... SO GOOD.

The truffle aroma wafted across the table as soon as the staff brought it over. woahhhh!! The wagyu slices were incredibly tender - drizzled with truffle shoyu and showered with teeny garlic chips. Each bite with runny onsen -soaked pearly Japanese rice brought great satisfaction to the tummy. For the price point, it's pretty decent. Tho I wished there were truffle sprinkles - like how Kabuke served it!

Nicely glazed with a glossy layer of sweet sauce, incredibly slime-y and smooth. Served over a bed of pearly Japanese rice, lightly marinated and mixed with seaweed bits and sesame seeds. Came with 2 tamago triangles on the side - decent in taste, nothing much to shout about but hey! the highlight really is on the unagi and rice!

Not a big fan of salmon and mayo in general, so this won’t be my go-to dish here. Mentaiko mayo was sweet with very subtle hint of umami. Salmon was aburi-ed but I couldn’t really taste the smokey flavour either. It’s a safe choice to please the crowd, but not for my tastebuds.

With a small menu focusing on Japanese dishes that are popular among most crowds in Singapore, Monzen serves some quality items. Tried their una don and was pleased to find the unagi fresh and well-seasoned. I feel the rice portion was a tad small but other than that, it’s a good option to get some donburis in the area.
