Mother-In-Law is a kiosk in the basement of Havelock II which sells artisanal Portuguese egg tarts which are handmade from scratch and baked fresh daily.

The difference between Portuguese egg tarts and the regular egg tarts (think: Tai Cheong) is that they are made of puff pastry (think: croissant) instead of short crust tart pastry. They also tend to be sweeter with a caramelised top. You therefore get a good contrast between the flaky and crispy pastry and soft and creamy egg custard with egg bite.

I am usually a fan of the regular egg tart but rather enjoyed MIL's signature egg tart. Their puff pastry was super crisp and butter whilst their egg custard was rich and smooth and reminded me of steamed egg.

Besides the signature egg tart, MIL also has a range of other flavours such as orh nee, ham & mushroom and chicken rendang?!? Is this then the equivalent of an open face curry puff? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Ordered @mil.eggtart on @pickupp.sg to try and they have a variety of flavours! I got a mixed box with 3 original egg tarts and 1 apple crumble, ondeh ondeh and ham. They're not bad and not too sweet, just that the crust can be a bit hard at times so I would have liked it more if it was more crisp!

If you're ordering items on Pickupp you can quote "FLYEETELFLY" to get $5 off $14 spent!

Ordered the yam, coffee and Earl grey egg tarts. Arrived around 1pm and only those flavours were left. The service was good and egg tarts are yummy.

Probably the best Portuguese egg tarts I've tried. Such tarts are best eaten hot and I was amazed by how crispy and buttery the pastry crust was! There were very interesting egg tart fillings as well and I got chocolate raspberry, yam sweet potato, coffee and earl grey. All were really good, and special mentions to the chocolate raspberry due to its thick rich ganash with citrus raspberry flavours, the aromatic real yam paste used in the yam sweet potato and the strong aromatic coffee flavours (but yet not too sweet). Each egg tart cost $3.30 - $3.50, and is even cheaper with #burpplebeyond ! Totally will get it again 😍

The thing that immediately catches my attention with this egg tart is the generosity of the egg custard. I've had so many egg tarts that are as flat as my face, so receiving these gloriously deep egg tarts with so much filling is just πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘ŒπŸ‘Œ

The egg custard is eggy and smooth, and the crust is flaky and crispy. A really good egg tart! At $2 it's a pretty reasonable price for a Portuguese egg tart but I'd probably get their unique flavours instead.

⭐ Rating: 8.3/10 crispy eggs
πŸ€‘ worth the price: ok
πŸ¦– would I buy again: I'd get the unique flavours
πŸ’ would I marry: yes
