Good news folks! The famous Old Airport Road Hokkien Mee is now available in the West! Itā€™s located at 177 Bukit Batok West Avenue 8, in the Get Together Coffeeshop, which boasts a few other famous hawker stalls.

This is my first time trying @namsinghokkienfried , which comes with yellow noodles, thin bee hoon, eggs, prawns and squid. One thing to note is that they uses thin bee hoon instead of the usual thick bee hoon, so as to better absorb the flavours of the broth. Another thing to note is that the eggs are fried separately till fluffy, rather than ā€˜clingingā€™ on to the noodles. I also like it that the prawns are de-shelled for easier consumption.

Prior to trying, Iā€™ve read reviews and noticed that @namsinghokkienfried is known for its wok-hei and flavourful prawn/seafood stock. However, much to my dismay, I find both factors sorely lacking in my plate of pipping hot Hokkien Mee. It seems to be an issue of differing standards across the outlets, but since Iā€™ve not tried the original at Old Airport Road, I am unable to confirm that this is indeed the case.

If you have tried them, do let me know your thoughts on it!

I havenā€™t tried the original Old Airport Road one so itā€™s hard to compare, but pity that this didnā€™t impress ā˜¹ļø Felt that the flavour of the stock didnā€™t really get to come through and it wasnā€™t very evenly fried. Theirs is the more dry type of hokkien mee, but the texture of the noodles was tad mushy. Hope itā€™s just consistency issues and will be better soon!

Looks dry and it was passable but the chili was good at least. Don't expect this outlet to be stellar

I finally get to eat-out after cooping up at home for the past two weekends. Not sure whether I am deprived but the fried hokkien mee from Nam Singā€™s newest outlet [in the West! Yay!] certainly perk up my appetite with its yellow noodles and bee hoon soaking up the flavourful broth. The waiting time is an approximately 20 minutes but Iā€™m just thrilled that I donā€™t have to travel all the way to Old Airport road whenever Iā€™m craving for a good plate of hokkien mee.

Famous Old Airport Road hokkien mee Nam Sing has arrived in the West! Now a third generation family business, itā€™s a satisfying slurp-worthy rendition. It isnā€™t the richest in seafood flavour and could do with stronger wokhei but brings back a certain nostalgia (given my childhood days of eating this at Old Airport). Do remember to request for their homemade sambal (aside the cut red chilli) for elevated umami flavours.

Priced from $5 for the small portion, the characteristics of Nam Sing Hokkien Fried Mee is their usage of cut up yellow noodles and thin bee hoon that you can easily pick it up with your spoon. The usual ingredients of sotong and prawns are cooked together with the noodles in their homemade stock. Whilst their signature way of serving is with cut chillies, we were surprised to find this outlet actually serves it with sambal belacan.

Perhaps they are still getting used to the frying equipment and stallā€™s operations, we certainly didnā€™t feel wowed from the food. There was a lack of flavour from the stock that was used to simmer the noodles and the sambal belacan robs away their identity on how they serve it at Old Airport Road.
