If you asking the Johor residents where to grab decent supper at night, this place usually will be on the list of recommendation.

This noodles place only open in the evening from 6pm onwards till late night, making it one of the best supper spot to grab some meal at night.

You can choose from either sitting outdoor beside the road, or indoor with air-conditioned.

As for their wan tan mee, you can choose either with the black sauce or not, whether to go with spicy or non-spicy. Also to choose the portion either small or big.

I actually like it considering the ingredients given, every plate of wan tan mee will come with a fried cracker, char siew, veggie and wanton in a bowl of soup.

Flavour might not be the greatest of all time, but this restaurant shines with their unique selection of dim sum.

Bittergourd rings stuffed with minced pork, century egg on minced meat, and even mushrooms.

The chicken feet here is very herbal, which is rather refreshing when compared to the normal lip smacking oilyness of regular chicken feet.

Been thinking about this addictive chicken. Ordered much more this time - you can choose specific parts. As reviewed previously, the rice wasn't bad, albeit straightforward.

Spotted Restoran Kak Kak after our breakfast at Restoran Ka Hoe that’s just down the same street. Came by the next day around 10am and some stuff were already sold out ☹️ Prices vary, but these 6 in white saucers were 21.60RM (S$7.20). The items were decent with some hits and misses.

Making it a point to visit a new kway teow kia place every time we’re in JB and Restoran Ka Hoe’s one of our overall favourites thus far! In addition to its smoothness, we loved that extra q their kway teow had. Even though our must-have braised eggs are still best at San Lou Kway Teow Kia, the intestines here were very well cleaned and braised. Remember to get their tofu, but skip on the powdery pig’s blood.

Broth was flavourful and a little peppery. I’m not usually a fan of fried shallots, but theirs were a must! We ordered a 1 pax portion of ingredients with 2 bowls of kway teow and it came up to 12RM (S$4). The kway teow portion was a bit small, but you can always top up at 2RM (S$0.70) for each serving.

The wanton mee at Hw Wan Tan Mee is a prime example. The charsiu is average and the wantons are decent but it’s the noodles and accompanying sauce that make it real memorable.

The noodles are a perfect vessel for their spicy black sauce which comes with a liberal dressing of lard. Amazing mouthfeel all-round.

This place opens at 9pm till 5am so it’s the perfect place for a late supper after a customary JB massage.

This is now my favourite wanton mee stall in JB. I do my JB runs every alternate Saturdays, and usually only day trips, so I never had the chance to eat this. It opens only after 9pm, and closes next morning 5am.

I liked the wanton mee at City Square Mall, Ho Seng Kee, for the unique texture of the noodles - thin, light, eggy, and slightly overdone. HSK's version was however lacking in flavour from the sauces, and one can argue that it's to allow the natural flavour of the noodles to shine.

But HW wanton mee has the best of both worlds. It has texture very similar to that of HSK (although softer), but it has a robust sweet savoury black sauce undergirded by the fragrance of lard oil. Best.

This makes me want to stay over in JB next time, just to eat this again. And it's just a few stores away from Bangkok Spa, so makes for a good after-spa supper :)

I got a regular matcha latte and it was pretty good! The matcha flavour was rich and it wasn’t too sweet as well. They sell instant drip coffee here too with beans from Colombia and Kenya. I bought some back to try but they’re usually available on preorder basis.

The orange cake tasted alright, it was dense and had a fragrant orange flavour. However it was a bit too sweet for my liking.

Where the crowds are, there is a high chance the food is going to be good. We applied this logic when we happen to walk past “Grandma Ong” in Bukit Indah, Johor, and were very pleased with the noodles we had.
My order was a small bowl of the hand-torn “mee hoon kueh” prepared dry-style. The pieces of al dente noodles were tossed in a dark sauce and came with plenty of “gao kee chye” (wolfberry leaves), handmade minced pork balls, springy fishballs and beef balls, crispy “ikan bilis” (dried anchovies) and fried shallots. What elevated this dish from tasty to ridiculously tasty was the super spicy “sambal belachan”. Laced with fresh lime, its refreshing brightness works remarkably well with the noodles. Furthermore, the eatery has another condiment I can never get enough of - the local variety of small green aromatic chillies that I seem to come across only in Malaysia nowadays. You can bet I spammed my bowl with those too.
My set meal which included a drink and a side dish of “ngor hiang” (five-spice fried meat roll) cost me just RM11.50 (about SG$3.80).
Here’s some info about Grandma Ong. According to the signs on display around the eatery, they have been around since 1999. One of the staff also shared with us that they have several outlets around Johor. So if you happen to spot one when you are in Malaysia, I recommend dropping in to try their food.
