Artichoke will be moving into a new home soon, and the last day of operations in the current Middle Road restaurant will be on 22 March. If you have a reservation from now till then, good on you! If not, shame on you but they will continue slaying with the New Bahru community from May. Till then, peace out and see you on the other side of Singapore!
And at the mention of their breadĀ ($4.80/ Bag of Bread), theĀ Green Harissa Prawns ($38) were wonderfully seasoned.Ā That tantalising green harissa enriched sauce/oil with split cream and burnt onions packed a nice heated punch so you would really need that extra warm dough to wipe it all up~ The prawns are also plump and sweet.
As good as I remembered them to be, Artichokeās hummus is a must so I got their Mezze Platter ($28) for lunch. Plated with miso hummus with pomegranate, beetroot hummus with sesame seeds,Ā Greek chickpea salad, refreshing greens, tangy pickles and bread; the 3 mezzes of the day were great to share for two. Smooth and creamy, the savoury miso hummus was bomb diggity but the vibrant beetroot dip was an absolute delight - both perfectly moreish and banginā when paired with their pillowy-doughy bread.
honestly i enjoyed both despite the reviews! the crust of both were rlly buttery. just that i wished the butter was inside the bolo bunš
the filling is so good but the skin is sooo sticky
veg and prawn filling. tasted v fresh! but i found the skin too sticky and thick
not that great honestly thereās barely any meat :( itās mostly bones
Small store in Sunshine Plaza that always has a crowd of people at meal times. Came with a group of 6 and this was what we got.
What was nice:
- Golden eggyolk lava buns ($5.30 for 3) easily the best item on the table. Their bestseller and for good reason. Soft and fluffy bao encasing hot and gooey salted egg custard. Amazing.
- Bolo Charsiew Buns ($5.50 for 2) were crispy on the outside and piping hot on the inside
- 'Spring is in the air' Cheong Fun ($5.80) was so unique I had no idea what to expect. Seemed like a popiah with cabbage, carrots and prawn fillings which was also crispy? And wrapped in a smooth silky cheong fun skin? Actually tasted pretty good especially with the accompanying sweet sauce.
- Queen size siewmai ($5.50 for 4) were huge and chunky
- Carrot cake w/ XO sauce ($5 for 3) was decent but the XO sauce was standout
- Lupcheong glutinous rice ($7.80) was pretty good, save some of the XO sauce for this. Would have been better with some chilli shrimp paste, but I didn't ask
What I would skip:
- Xiaolongbao ($5.50 for 3) was forgettable but still alright
- Bolo Butter Buns ($5.50 for 2) literally the same as the charsiew buns but without the fillings and instad comes with lurpak butter, but at the same price
- Vinegar pig trotter ($9.80) too vinegary for my liking but had a decent amount of meat
- Sausage yam cake ($5.70) and Chee Cheong Fun ($5) was nothing outstanding
Strawberry and pistachio
The strawberry was brilliant, it's either the lightest sponge I've ever had or the most cake-like cream I've had
Pistachio flavour was there as well, and both weren't too strong so they came tgt nicely, surprisingly
Matcha doesn't come thru much
Yuzu and goma were strong. In fact the yuzu was so strong it covered up the goma at first, the goma comes thru at the end.
As someone w sensitive taste buds the flavours clashed a lot and didn't mesh but my dining partner highlighted to me that not everyone perceives it the same way.
She's right because this is a bestseller here, their signature and so it must be that most ppl find it strong but harmonious enough to like it
The spiced Duck Kebab Skewer was a sweet-fat combo as it was served with blistered warm grapes that complemented the richness of the meat. The duck meat itself was butter-knife tender, juicy and flavoursome with a nice crispy skin.
Jewelled Hummus was both aesthetically beautiful and amazingly delicious. It had a myriad of rich flavours and textures with a hint of smokiness and spice, topped with pops of freshness from the pomegranate. Definitely the best I've ever had and relishing it all with the warm and fluffy slices of Turkish Bread ($4.50).
