The oldest stall at Newton Food Centre, Kwang Kee Teochew Fish Porridge gained its popularity from all the features and most importantly; the Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2021.

Although people know them for their porridge, some people actually recommended their yee mee instead.

The soup is cooked slowly with fish bones, and no pork or lard included at all. So it taste clean but flavourful. The sliced fish fresh and soft.

Visit #01-10 to enjoy a unique bowl of bak chor mee, as it uses XO sauce instead of the usual chilli paste, which gives the dish an extra oomph from the dried shrimps and shallots! πŸ˜‹ The ingredients are fairly diverse as you get to enjoy minced pork, fishcakes, a fried wanton, a normal fishball and a Fuzhou fishball with meat in it!

The noodles were also cooked really well, as they were not soggy and remained very springy. This made the dish pretty impressive! For $5, we think it is quite a steal, especially since prices at Newton Food Centre are above average. Do go and try it and you won't miss it because this is one of the stall's nearest to the main entrance of the hawker centre.

We decided to try this as it was on the Michelin bib gourmand list and we were not disappointed! This bowl of teochew fish mui looks really plain but just a sip of the soup will change your mind. Probably cooked for several hours, the soup is sweet and really flavourful. The many slices of batang fish tasted fresh as well. The mui wasn't a lot so there'll be stomach space to slurp the broth away πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹ Priced at $6, definitely worth a try if you're in this hawker centre!

We also heard about Heng Carrot Cake, another iconic stall at Newton Food Centre which is on the Michelin Bib Gourmand. The stall offers both the white and black versions of carrot cake, and we went with the black version as we like the dark soya sauce.

We got a small $4 plate and the one thing that caught our eye was the really generous serving of fried eggs in this carrot cake dish. The proportion of eggs to carrot cake is almost close to 50:50 so this should be a go-to for those of us who love a lot of eggs with our carrot cake. We also think it is a good choice to go for the spicy version (if you are not afraid of spicy food) as we felt the carrot cake alone would be somewhat tasteless, and the spice adds a pretty nice flavour to the dish. That being said, the $4 serving is a little small for two persons in our opinion, and you might want to pay more if this is going to be your main dish.

One downside, however, is that this stall is really popular and you need to be prepared to wait really long for your food to be ready. We waited almost half an hour for our carrot cake but thankfully, we ordered other dishes in the meantime as well. πŸ˜…πŸ˜… Aside from that, the carrot cake was pretty great and we would be happy to try other dishes at the stall (such as their fried oyster)!

Alliance Seafood is one of the more famous stalls at the Newton Food Centre and it is currently on the Michelin Bib Gourmand, so do expect pretty long queues if you are willing to buy from this stall. That being said, the stall has an exceptionally large selection of seafood items and some of their more popular ones include their chilli crab (with seasonal pricing) and the sambal stingray.

We ordered a small sambal stingray, which was very reasonably-priced at $12 and it was very decent. There was quite a lot of meat to eat for two of us and the stingray was served piping hot. Our favourite was the generous serving of sambal chilli, as it was really spicy and it provided a really good kick so you may want to be careful if you are not good with spicy food.

We were pretty satisfied with the stingray and we were pleasantly surprised that it was served to us pretty quickly (around 15 minutes), given that it was a Sunday night and the hawker centre was packed to the point where it was challenging to find a seat.
