Both Miss K and I prefer the Nian Nian You Yu's pomfret over their red snapper. Though the red snapper is 'meatier', it has a slight 'muddy' taste which you either love or hate.

As for their Thai style garlic & lime sauce, we felt that it was a little too sour and spicy and kinda detracted from the taste of the steamed fish. You also had to pay an additional buck for it. Between the 2 sauces, we would definitely choose the HK-style soy sauce!

Miss K and I have swiftly become fans of Nian Nian You Yu since we first tried them in December 2022.

Nian Nian You Yu serves steamed fish sets for solo diners which are tasty and affordably priced. They fill the gap between the fancy Chinese restaurants which will usually set you back by nearly 100 bucks or the overpriced (and usually lacklustre) steam fish options in your neighbourhood cai png stall.

The premise is very simple - for a fixed price, you get a choice between pomfret or red snapper. By default, it is served in a Hong Kong style soy sauce and topped with fried garlic bits and ginger. The fish is paired with a bowl of rice and a tomato soup.

We loved that their pomfret fish is fresh and tender. Their HK-style soy sauce was definitely the star of the show - sweet and savoury and absolutely divine with mildly sweet and clean tasting pomfret. Don't forget to ask for extra fried garlic bits and the wonderful tomato soup!

Prices started at $8 per set when we first visited them. They have since increased their prices several time due to inflation... The quality of their fish has dipped a little as well. It tasted a little 'old' during my latest visit last month but thst could be attributed to the fact that we usually end up with the last few fishes at the end of the day which have been in the steamer longer than others.

Definitely worth a visit if you ask me!

On my to-visit list for some time, Nian Nian You Yu's steamed fish sets made for a solid solo meal amidst the bountiful lunch choices at Maxwell Food Centre. Having the Steamed Seabass in HK style ($8.50) all to myself, I was pretty impressed by the portion (though the price has since surged from their initial opening - blame inflation). The combo of soy sauce, garlic, ginger slices, and coriander was simple, foolproof, and spot on for me - very homely and comforting. The fish was superbly tender, succulent, flakey fresh, sweet, and went swimmingly with the moreish savoury sauce (not fishy at all). Oh, and I love the aromatic, crunchy fried garlic bits! The soup on the side was sweet and slightly tangy too.

The fish was not whole but only one sided. The meat was kind mushy. Served immediately after order while one had to wait some time for the other 2 dishes.
