The taste of this meatless bak ku teh left me speechless! Idk what sorcery this is but the flavours were not beneath that of a normal bak ku Teh. I could almost go vegetarian with all the dishes here, organic and healthy 👍🏼


Nothing like soup to nurse a cold. So soup it was and I ordered this Klang style Bak Kut Teh. One spoonful and I was floored by how authentic and good it tasted. How could it be when it is meatless? Well, this is the magic of O'Bean. They are able to recreate flavours so well that you actually don't miss the meat. It's quite ironical that the closest version of Klang Bak Kut Teh I can get in Singapore is from a vegetarian restaurant but I am not complaining. Now I know where to get my fix! Yay!

How is this completely vegetarian? It was so dang good. Probably one of the better army stews I have had in a long time. Aside from the one soy-cake (like a tempeh "fish"cake thing) give away - everything else seemed so legit. The thing that confused me most were the sausages and faux luncheon meat because they were so... real. The stew was thick and creamy (from milk) and so flavourful. My fave order of the night.

I really enjoyed the sweetness of the soya combined the herbal flavour of the angelica root in this porridge. It was smooth and came with an egg to stir in, as well as a side of youtiao, diced century egg, nori strips and crunchy pickled veggies. The stuff of comfort food dreams.

This was a portion for one person. Apparently you can get a massive serving for 8 pax for $48.80.


SO TASTY. The special sauce is sweet and what gives it a little twist is the cumin seeds sprinkled over the porkless belly pieces. I could eat this for days.

After seeing Burppler @blueskiescottonclouds post about O'bean Organic Soya Vegetarian Place, I decided to take my parents there for dinner after convincing them it's a healthier alternative to our usual "zi char".
Here are the dishes shared among the three of us:
1) Sambal Four Heavenly Bean Claypot ($13.80+) - My dad and I liked this the most because it's just like what you'd get at typical "zi char" places except that the sambal is not as umami as it doesn't have dried shrimp.
2) Seaweed Century Egg Fried Egg ($15.80+) - The taste of the century egg was subtle as there wasn't a lot of it but overall, it's still decent especially if you dip it in the chilli sauce.
3) Dumpling Soya Soup ($11.80+) - My dad wasn't into this at all but mum was. Basically, it tastes like a slightly diluted soya bean milk with a subtle savoury slant. There are about half a dozen large, silky-skin dumplings, corn on cob and vegetables in there so it's suitable as a light meal for one person too.
4) Muttonless Curry Vegetable Claypot ($16.80+) - I enjoyed the chunky pieces of mock mutton (there's a succulent crunchiness in the stringy texture) and generous amount of cabbage and long beans. The curry itself is very thick - not exactly slurp-able in my opinion.

Verdict: I doubt vegetarian meals will ever be a regular event for us but this detour was a pleasant change. We did leave with takeaway cups of their warm organic soya milk with pearls which were very good.
