Reviews of good food at Old Seng Choong

Still doing your last-minute shopping for Chinese New Year goodies? Look no further than Old Seng Choong's cookies that take their inspiration from our local heritage and flavours.

Out of the 4 'Editions' (Lion City, Kampong Spirit, Colonial Days & Festive Blooms) that the cookies have been conceptualised in, my favourite has got to be Kampong Spirit. Under this edition, my top 2 picks are the Cereal Prawn Cookies and Bak Kut Teh Cookies. Because the flavours were so spot on, they’d also make great souvenirs when I visit my overseas friends! #Burpproved

Many thanks to Sixth Sense PR for the invitation to the media launch of Old Seng Choong’s flagship store at The Central!

I'll personally recommend these pineapple tarts for two reasons: first, the Singapore-centric flavours here are bold, interesting, but still well balanced; and second, they have a nice packaging which makes it a good gift.
🔸
What are the flavours?
* Bak kwa pineapple tarts (肉干黄梨挞), which contains slivers of bak kwa with charred hints that pairs nicely with the sweet pineapple;
* Spicy Nonya Pineapple Tart (娘惹黄梨塔) which contained Hae Bee Hiam (dried shrimp chilli paste) creating a lovely chilli-sweet mix;
* Orange Peel Pineapple Tart (橙皮黄梨塔) which blends finely chopped orange peel giving this treat a refreshing citrusy flavour, with a delicate honey sweetness.
My favourite? Orange Peel! It's fragrant and delicate.
🔸
Also pictured: lavender cookies and cereal prawn cookies at $18.80 per tin. Honestly, one of the better cookies I've received this year. Recommend too.

With a new image, it revitalizes the brand but yet retains its rich culture and history through the familiar flavours that has deeply entrenched in our nation’s food culture.

Be immersed in the history of our nation as Chef Daniel Tay introduces his version of the Singapore Story, using nuances of our hawker dishes and infusing the taste and smell of the ingredients that go into making these favourites into delectable bakes. Expect a selection of cookies, pies, butter cakes and other local delights that is perfect as a gift, souvenir or a treat to yourself. During the opening of the store, the cookies took centre stage through the Botanic Flora Series which include cookies infused with lavender and earl grey ($18.80 per can). What’s more interesting are the Changi Picnic Series which come with unique flavours that you don’t normally associate with cookies such as Satay, Cereal Prawn (my favourite and costs $19.80 per can), Bak Kut Teh and Putu Mayam. Last but not least, there’s the Katong Breakfast Series which carries flavours such as Laksa, Gula Melaka, Gai Zai and Smokey Bakwa.

Besides Old Seng Choong, Chef Daniel Tay also happens to be the brainchild behind Cat & the Fiddle, an Asian-inspired cheesecake shop that has also just opened opposite of Old Seng Choong.

Arrays of cookie flavours, inspired by the diverse food cultures in Singapore greet you as you step in. Be wow by savoury cookies like Bak Kut Teh, Cereal Prawn, even Laksa while those with a sweet tooth can hit those Earl Grey, Gula Melaka, and Lavender Cookies. Each tin retails from $18.80 and will be a great gift especially for overseas friends!

And with CNY drawing near, we also get to indulge in their festive goodies! Such as Spicy Nonya Pineapple Tart, made with dried spicy shrimp paste and Orange Peel Pineapple Tart, which has a refreshing citrusy flavour.

Once again congratulations to @ChefDanielTay and team on @OldSengChoong @CatandtheFiddleCakes flagship store opening!

Possibly the most intriguing cookies I’ve ever tasted, these crunchy nuggets are an inventive interpretation of well-loved Singaporean dishes. Infused with all-natural flavours, expect both savoury and sweet renditions inspired by Bak Kut Teh, Cereal Prawn, Satay, Laksa, Bakwa and Gula Melaka – just to name my favourites of which I bought a tin each – yes, I bought six!

Go check out the shop and sample the cookies for yourself because they’re truly mind-blowing. It’s insane because you’re eating a cookie, yet you’re experiencing such unconventional flavours you didn’t know could exist in a morsel like that. You’ll know what I mean once you start popping them into your mouth.

I’m impressed as it’s fragrant and tasted natural – as if I was eating pandan and coconut. Thanks @oldsengchoong for this lovely tin of goodness!❤️

Bought it during an early bird promotion and it was a great decision. Love the traditional twist of pineapple tarts as it’s fragrantly spicy yet sweet at the same time. The two flavours harmonise well without overpowering one another.
