located conveniently within the SMU campus, I’ve seen Onalu appear on my IG feed a couple of times, with their delicious looking bagels 😍 it was no wonder that I had to pop by on a weekend afternoon to grab some of these bagels for myself.

we ordered 𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓑𝓲𝓰 𝓑𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝓯𝓪𝓼𝓽 ($14) and it was generously stuffed with bacon streaks, honey baked ham, hash brown, scrambled eggs, and cheddar & Monterey Jack cheese as well as their secret sauce.

however, when we took our first bite the combination struck us as weird, and it went downhill from there. the bagel was soaked in some sort of sweet tasting maple syrup and the ingredients just didn’t meld well together. the hash brown was also cold and soggy and tasted like it had been left out a long time. overall, it felt like it was a more expensive rendition of McGriddles but.. well we’ll stick with the OG.

Not to be compared with the other hugely popular bagel house, and ONALU actually stands out for an affordable option with decent combinations in the menu. Between the Hash Stack ($7) and Devilled Spam ($8), I will go for the savoury latter, which is stacked with spam, cheddar, Monterey Jack cheese and mashed devilled eggs. The slight heat from the paprika gives it a nice flavour component but the bagel can tend to get a bit soggy towards the end so eat it fast.

There are days where something simple would do — forget about fancy cakes with all that frosting and emphasis on flavours; those things that sometimes just over-complicate matters and may even quite be pure distractions from the cake itself.

The Banana Walnut Loaf from Grams was indeed what I was craving for on the day when I made my way to Onalu — having more complicated cakes lately kinda made me forget about the bliss I simply get from a simple Banana Walnut Loaf; their version is a little cakey, but still comes with mushy bananas within that gives a sweet caramalised note. I ain’t particularly a fan of chocolate chips found in my banana bread usually, but I didn’t quite mind the small nobs of gooey, melted chocolate chips found in the Banana Walnut Loaf here — perhaps I was just craving for some chocolate on a rare day without being particularly picky on what it is. And the best part — I absolutely adore how the Banana Walnut Loaf is served all warmed up by default; crusty exterior and a soft fluffy cake within that isn’t too dense. Comfort at its very best, not to mention they have an ultra-chill playlist that works great to wind down just before catching the bus home from the bus stop right outside the cafe.

Simple but delicious cheese bagel. It’s housemade jam with almond butter. Added on cheddar and monterey jack cheese. This is a perfect combi!

Satisfying bagels w great texture and substantial fillings! I love the maple mayo in the BEC, balances out the saltiness of the bacon(or ham). Love the melty cheddar and monterey jack as well.

Located in SMU, this café offers hyped food and environment for students and general masses who like to hang out at a university environment. In frame is B.E.C. (is it Bacon, Egg and Cheese? - $10) with sesame bagel. It is a typical café fare big breakfast in bagel format and similar in composition with one menu item in a renowed bagel house. Overall it taste good due to the aioli and cheese. The scrambled egg seems to be done with a lot of butter as the paper wrapper was drenched with it, that the bacon becomes a bit soggy with it too. If you like butter this is great but very messy. They are really generous with the bacon serving though. The black coffee ($4) is good too - no acidic aftertaste (I don't like coffee with high acidity or fruit-ish notes), just nice and quite balanced. The indoor space is bright, airy, well socially-distanced, rustic and instagramable, with more seats outdoor including the SMU wooden benches facing the National Museum.
