We would also recommend their 𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐥𝐚𝐥𝐚 (clams) and 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐤𝐨𝐧𝐠. They do their sauces exceptionally well here and these were some of the best renditions of these classic dishes that we’ve had.

Gloriously plated dish reminiscent of those served at elaborate CNY dinners. The fried pomfret was the standout of the night - the light batter encased tender fish slices that brimmed with freshness, and brilliantly complemented with a Thai sweet/sour sauce. The mango salad was bright with zest and crunch, although we felt that the mangos were a little underripe and hard. We still wiped the whole plate clean; testament to its sheer deliciousness.

Hidden in a quiet part of Bishan is a unassuming tze char store which serves really really good dishes. Tried the fish slice steamboat ($28) and the taste is equivalent or even better than many of the popular fish head steamboat which I have tried so far. Other impressive dishes are their signature dry hor fun and prawn paste chicken ($8/Small).

Both their 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐩𝐞𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢 𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐬 were cooked well with (again) great sauces. Sure, the sauces were distinctly starchier than more famous versions, but the “homely” take struck a chord. The black pepper sauce even tasted like that used for black pepper steaks! 😆 That said, the crabs, though cooked well, did not absorb the sauces, and one had to actively mix the shredded crabmeat with the sauce for more satisfying bites.
