Wasn’t really quite my idea, but since the dining partner was looking to try them out, we found ourselves heading to Ottoman Turkish Delights at Bussorah Street — right at the heart of the Kampong Glam neighbourhood to check them out. Ottoman Turkish Delights is best known for their freshly-baked Baklava, Turkish Coffee in sand (they brew the coffee in a pot that is called a “cezve” whilst heating the cezve up in a pan filled with hot sand) and Turkish Delights, which they retail in several flavours.

Whilst we were taking away some of the Turkish Delights here, we couldn’t resist ourselves from ordering the Bird Nest Baklava — they do offer a few flavours but we decided to go for the Milk Chocolate and White Chocolate renditions. A twist to the usual Baklava, the Bird Nest Baklava features the same phyllo dough that is usually a feature with Baklava — the only difference lies in the shape of the Baklava where the Bird Nest Baklava is shaped somewhat like a bowl with the fillings being in the middle. Drenched in syrup, the phyllo dough holds up well to the moisture; it’s undeniably light and crisp — almost similar to that of the exterior of a well-fried Chinese spring roll without the grease, all that with a white chocolate or milk chocolate filling within. It’s actually pretty sweet, as with how Turkish desserts tend to be, but we also liked the slight nutty notes that the pistachio carried; also a little roasty as well. It pairs up well with the Turkish Coffee in sand that they serve — the strong body and roasty aroma of the Turkish Coffee cuts through that sweetness of the Bird Nest Baklava, just as described by the folks behind the counter here.

Whilst operating as a takeaway shop with no dine-in area, one may speak to the folks behind the counter nicely and they may be able to arrange for you to be seated at Sultan Turkish Restaurant just right across for those who are interested to have their Turkish confectioneries comfortably seated down on the spot. There aren’t many spots in Singapore that serves Turkish confectioneries around, though there seem to be a few around the Kampong Glam neighbourhood. That being said, Ottoman Turkish Delights is a spot that is worth a visit for those who wishes to have an introductory experience to Turkish confectioneries in Singapore.
