BASO YAMIEN ASIN
SAVOURY NOODLE WITH MEATBALL
S$13.80++

Ordered through scanning of QR code. Troublesome as need to key in personal details such as mobile number and email address. Menu quite limited. Felt that prices was more on the high side.
The accompanying chilli sauce while spicy was addicting

Paris Van Java
Address πŸ›– : 304 Orchard Rd, # 01-45 Lucky Plaza, Singapore πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡¬ 238 863

Came across some social media posts on the new Paris Van Java, which we found ourselves pretty intrigued about. Taking over the former premises of the now-defunct Ayam Penyet Ria outlet at level 1 of Lucky Plaza, Paris Van Java is a new Indonesian F&B establishment which had recently opened its doors in December 2022 β€” the establishment being located in quite a prominent location situated beside the Bebek Goreng Pak Ndut outlet within the same complex. Unlike most of its neighbours within the mall, Paris Van Java stands out with its modern interior design β€” there is no doubt that the interior decor is kept to a pretty functional design, but the use of light wooden accents for its furniture and wooden panelling around its walls and counters, as well as the bright lighting creates a really clean, contemporary and welcoming look that stands out from the other tenants within Lucky Plaza. Whilst occupying a pretty decently-sized shop unit, the selection of items on the menu at Paris Van Java does seem to be fairly limited in comparison β€” for a start, the menu only comprises of a section dedicated to Noodles, and another dedicated to Fried Rice when it comes to their hot food offerings; the former comprises of the Baso Yamien Manis (i.e. Sweet Noodle with Meatball) and the Baso Yamien Asin (i.e. Savoury Noodle with Meatball), while the latter features three (3) variants of Nasi Goreng. Only two (2) desserts are being offered at Paris Van Java β€” the Cincau (i.e. Grass Jelly) or Brownie with Ice-Cream, while beverages include specialty coffee such as that of Latte, Cappuccino and Espresso, various types of tea and lemonade, just to name a few.

With a menu of such a size, it was fairly easy for us to narrow down on which dishes to go for. We found ourselves going for the Baso Yamien Manis. Described as Sweet Noodle with Meatball on the menu, we noted that the Baso Yamien Manis comes as a dry noodle dish with the soup containing greens and the Baso (i.e. meatballs) being placed in a separate bowl. The noodles here also came with a good load of crispy shallots, spring onions and beansprouts. It is noted that patrons do not have the choice of opting between various types of noodles here; the only (and default) noodle option that is being served with the Baso Yamien Manis here was one that we found to be close to what we call Mee Pok. Tossed in what seems to be sweet soy sauce, we liked how that seems to take away some of the alkalinity of the noodles β€” there is also a lingering hint of pepper which shouldn’t be too intimidating for those with lower tolerance to spiciness that lingers in the finish. In fact, the noodles were so flavoursome that we could have totally mopped it up in no time as-is. The soup was also a delight to have; it’s especially savoury and flavourful without being too heavy to the taste buds β€” again something which we could just finish in no-time at all. The baso was also pretty well-executed here; made from what seems to be beef, not only did they carry a firm bite β€” it was also done to a somewhat pinkish texture whilst being reasonably gamey to bring out the beefy flavours here. The inclusion of crunchy greens kept the entire bowl of soup with the baso pretty refreshing; cuts through all that meatiness from the baso while the accompanying chilli dip is only meant for those tolerable to higher levels of spiciness β€” it doesn’t hold back in sending the tingles down the taste buds with how it hits immediately, yet lingers around and builds up over time. Overall, a very satisfying dish where no time was wasted in finishing up the entire item.

Having also tried the Nasi Goreng Cabe Ijo (i.e. Green Chili Fried Rice) and the Teh Poci (i.e. Claypot Brewed Tea) during our visit to Paris Van Java, one thing is pretty evident about Paris Van Java β€” no doubt we are not the folks who can comment on whether the dishes here are done authentically considering our lack of experience with Indonesian fare and also how we have yet to visit Indonesia to try out their food in their own land, we could say that Paris Van Java do serve up some really delicious and well-executed Indonesian fare that is especially easy to relate to even for those whom have properly tried Indonesian fare before. There was nothing that we disliked about our meal at Paris Van Java; the Nasi Goreng Cabe Ijo was done in a way that was almost Chinese-style β€” somewhat Din Tai Fung-esque without the use of eggs, retaining that moistness and flavour without being particularly greasy, and coming with fragrance of green chili peppers and tender, wok-fried chicken chunks for a wholesome feel. The Teh Poci was a great way to refresh ourselves from all that spiciness that was going on for the chili dip that came with the Baso Yamien Manis; a very fragrant Jasmine tea that wafts of a floral aroma and comes served in earthenware, coming with rock sugar for those who need the sweetness for their tea β€” something which we thought was a rare find in Indonesian establishments here. With its great execution of Indonesian cuisine, Paris Van Java is a spot worthy for a visit β€” this is despite them being a little upmarket considering how their main courses are priced at $12.80 to $13.80. Still, Paris Van Java is a spot that we would find ourselves returning to for a comforting Indonesian fare β€” the food being something which we would likely find ourselves craving for soon!
