As the name states, this is possibly a dish you'd want to indulge in to feel better in the event of a bad break up & you'd likely will.
The break up steak is made of a 300g aged ribeye, aged in-house, served with 2 types of salt - garlic salt & smoked chilli salt, mashed potatoes, twice sautรฉed mushrooms & roasted carrots.
It may look simple, but the cooked at medium rare, the ribeye is so tender & soft, it almost melts in your mouth. The 2 salts (made in-house) provided helps to heighten the flavour by just a notch, making it super easy for you to wipe this plate clean!
The sides that comes with the steak compliments it pretty well & definitely fills you to the brim!
Definitely something for you to try if you're a steak lover! #noragrats
Shared my thoughts about the finished product in my previous post, but here's how it starts.
Never would you have imagined how each component complimented each other so so well. A definite must order if you are a burrata fan!
A stand out dish of the night was our starter, the Salted Fish Buffalo Mozzarella Burratina. Essentially, your usual burrata suspects, with a twist of salted fish.
Yes, salted fish. Deep fried salted fish is added to the mix to give this pop a different dimension!
The dish is first served separately, and plated right in front of you. Each piece of thinly sliced & crispy foccacia is used as a base to piece together the burrata, roasted cured tomatoes, a drizzle of honey, topped with bits of salted egg & black sesame.
what you get is an amazing mix of sweet, savoury, salty, as well as loads of crunch beyond your imagination.
Not traditional, but so so good.
I first dined at this outlet when they were called Pasta J, and they were located at Upper Thomson. They have now relocated to Novena and we have yet to go there. Iโve tried their Breakup Steak and Pesto Pasta with Prawns and Squid, and I was blown away both times. The steak is tender, cooked to perfection and so flavourful. Iโm not a fan of prawns, but believe me, the prawns in their pesto pasta are the only prawns I actively want to eat (and miss eating). I asked them to switch out the squid for more prawns, because thatโs how much I love their prawns! Their twice sautรฉed shrooms are absolutely delicious as well. Highly recommended because of the great food, and also because you can bring dogs to the restaurant ๐

We had the 22.90 range - mac and cheese, pesto and CARAMEL CARNIVORE. I liked the last pasta best, but the mac and cheese was a close second!
Brined for 2 weeks before it hits the grill for that lovely char and the oven for that perfectly even cook - no sous vide involved here. The wagyu tomahawk itself is ordered without the bone so you gain all that โboneโ weight in meat. Itโs finally crusted in toasted black sesame before being served with slow roasted tomatoes and ohsoamazingcaramelised carrots.
The meat is then carved and served at the table, in batches, so the meat stays juicy and warm throughout the meal. The richness of the meat, with a little tartness from the tomatoes and sweetness from the caramelised carrots - takes you to a happy food coma after the meal is done.
Donโt forget to also try their soups and pastas (tomato soup, Muddy Mushroom soup, Clammy Addiction and Caramel Carnivore (the upgraded version has meatballs now!) pastas being some of my favorites! Too bad the killed the Bourdain). A reservation and a $100 deposit is required when you book the wagyu tomahawk or the short ribs. Go with at least 4 pax or 3 monsters. You wonโt regret this.

Best steak ever!! No dishes in Pasta J disappoints. And best thing is that itโs also pet friendly. Nicely done with sesame seeds coating the steak. Savoured every mouth of it ๐
One of the star dishes at this diner along Thomson Road is the Break-Up Steak ($42.90); its name connotes that the steak is good enough to replace a partner after a break up. Though we can't speak for that, we do know you can expect 250g of hearty ribeye cooked to tender and juicy perfection, complete with a smoky crust derived from their secret housemade rub.

Fragrant(can smell as soon as it hits the table) and extremely coconutty as advertised. The texture was really velvety but I felt the burntness of the toast overwhelming the taste of the Kaya. My friend however could perceive the taste of the Kaya through the toast and he absolutely loved it
Truly lives up to the hype. Basically the break up steak except with sirloin instead of ribeye. While sirloin is commonly regarded as the tougher cut compared to ribeye and leaner, this one was excellent. Sure there was some connective tissue that made it chewy but the texture of the steak itself was flawless. Good amount of crust and so much flavour contained inside. Really juicy as well. It was nothing like any other steak I've tasted, just as they said. Best steak I've had period
Btw it came with pepper that u grind yourself in a weird mortar and pestle, as well as garlic salt. Really does make a difference
The sides were really good as well. Their usual unique mushroom with a really sweet caramelised baby carrot(it was so sweet my friend thought it was sweet potato at first). Finally mash that's quite decent(again not the ubiquitous kind, it's slightly grainy)
Update: they don't dry age, they don't sous vide. So how they get the consistent pink and so much flavour is completely beyond me
Not exactly what we expected it to be as it looked like mushroom soup and tasted slightly salty without the typical creamy chowder feel. Fresh live clams were thinly sliced & streaky bacon bites were detected. If you ask me, I still prefer the Muddy Mushroom Soup ๐
Still glad to be back here again for the steak & felt refreshed by the new retrofitted dining atmosphere ๐๐ป #burpple
Owner John has given it a more โatasโ setting with more sitting capacity! You can also book the entire place for private/company event as I noticed thereโs a built in screen & projector installed ๐๐ป
Work in progress too in revamping the menu.
Signature Break-Up Steak ($42.90) will stay of course! How can we not have this juicy 250g Ribeye cut that is sooo good that it could replace your lover ๐

Pasta J is pet friendly and it has great food. I have heard so much about the break up steak even before coming so we had to try it.
Upon arrival, Romeo, was immediately given a bowl of iced water by the friendly staff which he gleefully lapped up. When the steak arrived, he could smell it and got really excited too. Pasta J did not leave him out and brought some beef jerky treats for him.
The steak ($42.50+) was the right amount of fatty and lean, making it so juicy. We had ours medium rare and it was cooked that way, with some parts a little bit more medium. Overall, it tasted great and tender, melting in your mouth! It would be even better if the steak was a bit thicker. Still worth trying though! The steak came with pepper, salt, roasted carrots, mashed potatoes and mushrooms. The carrots were really sweet. (Taste: 8.3/10)
The cafe was spacious and we would come back again with Romeo to try the other things on the menu!
Here for a few times, I still loved their pesto shrimp and squid pasta, one with their specialty pesto sauce thatโs punchy with goodness of herbs.
This period, Pasta J also features some limited handmade Dim Sum with flavours you wouldnโt find elsewhere. Think shroom cheese crystal Bao with truffle oil and squid ink dumpling with escargot and pesto. We had their black pepper crab spring roll that was a tasty crab variant to the traditional one.
The best of all, pet owners will be delighted over the fact that this is a pet-friendly restaurant. So much that your pet dog may receive a big tight hug greeting from their boss. A place where you will be able to dine in comfort with your furkids.
Set in a row of shophouses along Upper Thomson Road, Pasta J makes an excellent spot for pasta-loving dog owners. Dogs are welcome indoors, but you will have to keep yours on a leash beside you. The owner is likely to come by with lots of cuddles though! He's also known to host dress-up events for fur babies. The upcoming Pasta J Dog Halloween Party is on 29 October, with a best dressed competition for owners and their dogs who show up in costume. Food wise, Pasta J does excellent pastas. Get your meat on with the Caramel Carnivore ($16.90). Burpple Tastemaker Kelly Wong loves how the pasta is slicked with smoky, caramelised onions and tossed with marrow, meat and cartilage. She also declares the topping of pork balls to be the yummiest she's had! Pro tip: Seating is limited so make reservations if you're visiting in a group.
Avg Price: $30 per person

Verdict: ๐ 1st time having shredded meat in my mushroom soup. The taste is quite nice...just need a little getting used to i guess.
An additional garlic bread at the side or top with some croutons would be really nice ๐
