More Reviews of good food at People's Park Complex Food Centre

I know there’s lots of option for Chinese foods here in the food centre, and this round I went to this stall called the Chuan Wei Yuan 川味园.

I must warn you about the portion, as all single dishes would served in big standard size that could feed at least 4 people.

Their sauerkraut fish 酸菜鱼 is so addictive with the soup, filled with generous slices of fish inside.

We also went for their sour & spicy shredded pork, chili chicken and shredded potato as well.

It would get more and more salty as you eat all of them.

Found this Mun Chee Kee Salted Vegetable & Pigs Organ Soup stall here in Chinatown that serving the authentic pork soup, which I recommend to go with the assorted one that comes with every part of the pig organ.

You can either pair it with rice or mee suan.

The former popular roasted meat stall here may have closed for good, but the same spot has replaced with another new stall that sell the same thing.

O KEE continue the tradition charcoal roasted method to serve their roasted meat. Their roasted duck layered with savoury seasoning flavour. The skin retains the smoky crisp bites and the meat is chewy and moist enough for me.

Ordered from Chuan Wei Fang Xiang La Xie (川味坊香辣蟹) and the total is only $45 for 6 pax. Really delicious and affordable.

Hopefully after the renovation, price remain affordable.

From 川味园 (Chuan Wei Yuan) stall.

This was one of the most affordable Mapo tofu options that I have come across. Like all Mapo tofu dishes you buy off Sichuan stalls, this was one oily bowl of soft silky tofu which would pair perfect with a bowl of white rice. For $5.50, Chuan Wei Yuan gives a generous amount of minced meat, as the other places I’ve had Mapo tofu will almost always be stingy with their meat. While it strikes one as excessively oily, I surprisingly did not feel too bloated after the meal. Unfortunately, I did wish that this bowl of Mapo tofu had a much spicier kick — and perhaps this could have been requested. Nonetheless, I did think this was pretty damn decent mapo tofu at an affordable price!

Crispy Fried Dumplings with juicy pork filling inside. Recommended to eat this while it's warm.

Decent cutlet with what seemed to be lemon sauce. The other components aren't worth mentioning. Sorry I don't remember which stall, but I know it's run by PRC folks.

I love how it was piping hot when i first got it 🔥 The flakey exterior crust was contrasted by the doughy bread-like interior holding the fillings together. I enjoyed how this pancake was not too greasy! 👍 It also comes with thick chonky pieces of peanuts, very ideal for people who enjoys chunky nuts!! It also has an adequate amount of sweetness, similar to those in less sweet red bean buns.

I was rather let down by the lack of fragrance despite the addition of sesame seeds. The crust was also rather thick with a 3:1 crust to filling ratio, thus resulting in it tasting quite surfeit even after a few bites. Definitely best eaten when shared between two people. 👭 Would be cool if the sugar was molten in the bun too. :/

If you are a carby-person and miss sweet snacks from china, this would be an acceptable compensation for the lack of travel due to covid. 😗 I'd also recommend the other savoury buns and pancakes which i enjoy! 🤭

Drumstick with pork belly rice

My favourite Braised Duck rice.

The chilli is great, ask for more chilli!!

The Duck meat is soft and tender.

The pork belly is so soft, it's melts in your mouth.

Expect a queue during lunch time, 10mins wait only.

After ordering, they will bring the food to your table.

I was intrigued after seeing @renztan post about her favourite hawker for roast duck being resurrected, so when I found myself in the area, it was a no-brainer to pop by People’s Park Food Centre to give Toh Kee Roast Meat (stall #01-1016) a try.
Ordered the roast duck, “sio bak” and char siew. All were good with the first two meats being my preferred, and the super juicy and crunchy-skinned roasted pork belly edging out the duck for number one position. This stall does not do sliced cucumbers or sweet sauces. Instead, they scatter some nutty boiled yellow beans (which I love) over the meats, and serve a bowl of runny, savoury dark sauce alongside (it is recommended to be splashed on your rice).
I was told by Sky, grandson of the founder of the now-defunct Toh Kee Roasted Duck stall (note the small name change due to the expanded offering), that he uses the same recipe for his duck. Since I have never had the original, I am unable to draw a comparison but it was tasty (breast meat could have been tenderer though). Enjoyed it most when paired with their customised plum sauce.

🔥Fried dumplings (S$5 for 12pcs) at People's Park hawker centre. Nicely fried crispy layer with juicy meat and chives fillings. Good value for $5 😆.

😋👍 Famous Yong Tao Fu (S$4.50). This is my fav YTF in Chinatown. You can't miss this stall as the queue is always really long. The queue moves fairly quick as they only serve one item.

You get the standard 10pcs YTF. Place your order and let them know your table number (best if you seat near the stall) and they will bring it to you.

The soup is full of flavour even though it looks clear, not too heavy and the YTF is fresh. Must try if you come to this hawker centre for lunch🔥👍.

You probably seeing many people here would have a huge hotpot on their table with a huge fish.

Chuan Wei Fang is one of the famous stall here that sell this. The portion was huge but enough for 3 pax to eat.

Lots of ingredients given and spicy enough. Be careful of the tiny bones and lots of meats.

It’s been awhile to have some Sichuan food. This time we try the stall beside Ri Ri Hong, Chuan Wei Fang serves extensive menu that you can see from the big board in front of the stall.

It wasn’t much pork slices there and covered with lots of vegetables and sauce.

Have been eyeing this for a while now and finally gave it a try! It’s a tiny stall among the other take-away food stalls just in front of People’s Park Complex - right next to the shop selling lots of bottled drinks. Think they only have this and grilled squid on the menu for now. The grilled cold noodles is made by grilling a sheet of noodle, topped with onions, chili, egg and sausage, before being cut up. Noodle texture is the more dense sort and has a bit of a chew. It’s saucy, spicy and sweet, a pretty addictive combination I must say! Not sure how authentic it is, but I liked it!

Price around $12.50 for two packets of rice. Taste wise was ok but there are many other stalls there which is pretty highly rave too such as the ytf, duck rice, xlb which is slightly cheaper! Will give those a try next time :)

People’s park roasted delights

From a shop that has been here from the beginning of ages -

Excellent chewy noodles ( very similar to the ones I had at abc market - see my earlier posts )
Tossed with a great marination - not too sweet or salty and best of all - not drenched in the corn starch sort of sticky sauce .

The char siew was lean and nice but a little tough in my opinion - could be more tender 😊

An old heartwarming grandma who prepares the popiah with love when ordered! :”) just simple honest good old popiah

Lots of good food here: the famous 日日红 Ri Ri Hong Mala fragrant hotpot, Original Koo Kee yong tau foo stall and another famous Yong Tau foo stall is here too. This time I had La mian with chicken cutlet for only $3.50??! It’s not bad but the broth was rather bland. Egg tomato noodle was dull too, not as tomatoey as I was expecting for.. Still, it did fill my stomach and cost below $10 for 2 pax.

When Renae, a foodie friend of mine, asked me if I would like to try some good and authentic "Biang Biang Noodles", I said yes at once. It did take a while though for us to find a date that worked but our trip to People’s Park Complex was a fruitful one on all accounts.
The eatery is located outside the building and faces the hawker centre. It has a black signboard with the Chinese words “西安印象” and a perpetual queue of Chinese nationals either waiting to place, collect or wolf down their orders at the few tables situated in front. The air crackles with energy as you approach the food shops lined along that stretch and the authenticity is undeniably loud and proud.
Renae did the ordering and that is how I had a serving of Biang Biang Noodles as well as two Pork Buns (she must think I have a bottomless pit 😂), while she had a plate of 西安传统拌面 (Xi’an traditional mixed noodles) and the two of us shared a plate of braised pig’s ears.
I really enjoyed the broad and extremely long handmade noodles from this stall. Smooth, soft but enjoyably chewy, there was probably a total of two ribbons of noodle per plate - just like the last Biang Biang Noodles I ate in, of all places, New York. This stall’s version differs from that as it is a touch sweeter and has a refreshing burst from smashed fresh tomatoes, raw chopped garlic and plenty of beansprouts. I must say, I‘d spam it with chilli the next time for a bigger kick.
