I’ve been posting lots of Plain Vanilla salads lately, because I like them a lot. This was pasta, aubergine and anchovies, and roasted cauliflower and pomegranate. The highlight of the first were the juicy, well-cooked aubergines. In the second, I liked the cauliflower a lot – it was cut into small pieces, with some parts resembling cauliflower rice, but mostly still in small florets with a nice tender bite. There were sautéed onions and chopped nuts too.

A small salad consists of two out of three possible options, which rotate on a daily basis. I had an artichoke french bean pasta salad, and a lettuce microgreens and egg salad. The former was predominantly conchiglie pasta and soft sweet onions, with a single artichoke and several french beans. The latter was a very "green" tasting salad of slightly bitter salad vegetables, edamame and half a hard boiled egg. Not one of my favourite combinations of salads amongst those I've had from Plain Vanilla, but stil good for a simple lunch.

The salads are pricey but I like them a lot! This was a mix of kale romaine caesar and couscous tomato aubergine. The kale salad had some croutons as well. Both were flavourful and tasty.

Plain Vanilla offers a variety of savoury tarts. I chose pumpkin, pine nut and sage as I saw good reviews of it online. It's more of a pie or quiche, 4" in diameter, baked in a thick crust with an egg custard filling. I was surprised that the tart was served cold. The crust was too thick and hard and the egg custard filling was extremely jelak and gave me a headache. The only part of this I enjoyed was the pumpkin layer in the filling. Overall didn't really like the tart much.

The salad fared much better. It was a mix of cous cous, brown rice, cauliflower, chickpeas, pine nuts and raisins, and was very tasty, though I would have appreciated more veg and less grains.

I ordered this from Grab. There are different sizes of salads, and a small gets you two choices. When the box arrived it looked small, but it's actually a deep box so the portion was just right for lunch.

I chose the kale and orrechiette salad, and the greek salad. I think they replaced the orrechiette with a cous cous/brown rice mix – the first had cous cous, brown rice, edamame and kale. The second had capsicums, onions, zucchini, green olives and feta cheese. Both were well-dressed, delicious, and complemented each other well.

Nice place to chill along Bukit Timah Road, while watching the cars zoom by.
The texture of the lemon cream tart was not too crumbly, which is the way I like it and the lemon cream had a perfect balance of citrus and sugar ($7)
Was surprised too by the galette. Flavours of berries, peanut butter accompanied the crunchy crust. Would want to order it again the next time I am back ($5)
A cup of black coffee will be the perfect companion for both.
Will beback again, surely :)
