C’rius Bake might not be a name that is familiar to most, but one that is more certainly ring a bell for those who are staying around the Beauty World neighbourhood. Having started its operations as a neighbourhood bakery situated at Bukit Timah Plaza since 2013, C’rius Bake had opened another outlet in recent times at Beauty World Centre — pretty much putting a firmer footprint of their presence within Beauty World that is even stronger than before. The folks at C’rius Bake aren’t resting on their laurels however; they have since launched their latest concept outside of the C’rius Bake brand. Located at Bukit Timah Plaza though this time round right beside Sherwood Snack Bar located at basement 2, Prologue by C’rius Bake is their very first venture into dine-in cafe operations — the small shop space does mean that seating does get a little claustrophobic, though the interior of Prologue by C’rius Bake is simply decorated and can seat 18 pax at its maximum capacity; most seats being catered to pairs though easily configurable to larger groups as well. The menu at Prologue by C’rius Bake can be said as a huge departure away from the standard items which C’rius Bake offers — whilst C’rius Bake serves up a line-up of breads and buns typically sold in neighbourhood bakeries, Prologue by C’rius Bake can be said as the more upscale concept between the two. Apart from serving up toasts and buns, Prologue by C’rius Bake also serves up Premium Sandwiches that features croissant or sourdough bread. They also do offer a variety of viennoiserie — think Kouign Amann and several forms of savoury croissants that are all stocked up in the display shelf at the counter, as well as sliced cakes that are on display in the display chiller. Effort has also been placed into the selection of beverages here — specialty coffee is brewed using beans roasted by Cowpresso Coffee Roasters; they also do run a cafe at the nearby Lorong Kilat, while tea is sourced from the Gryphon Tea Company. Apart from specialty coffee and tea, Prologue by C’rius Bakes also serves up a small variety of milkshakes, as well as hot / iced chocolate.

Visiting Prologue by C’rius Bakes in the late morning closer to lunch hour on a weekend, we were pretty torn between ordering the Kaya Butter Toast and the Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich — this is especially so considering our love for Kaya Butter Toast, and that it does seem to be the popular order here with most of the patrons having the Kaya Butter Toast at the table during our visit. We eventually settled for the Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich, since we thought it would be better to settle for a savoury item when we intended to give their sliced cakes a go. All sandwiches / toasts / buns are made upon order at Prologue by C’rius Bakes, so do expect some waiting time involved for the order to be served up at the table. For those who would like their Teriyaki Chicken sandwiches to come with a thick slab of teriyaki-glazed chicken thigh for an extra meaty bite — the Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich from Prologue by C’rius Bakes is probably not quite the item for you. It is interesting to see how the approach by Prologue by C’rius Bakes for their Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich was to have their chicken all diced in small bits almost akin to a mince and laced with mayonnaise and melted cheese, sandwiched in between two slices of sourdough bread — perhaps also due to the limited space in their kitchen as well. We couldn’t find much “Teriyaki Chicken” within the Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich; the more dominant flavours here would the mayonnaise and the melted cheese, though it also would not be quite right to say that the Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich wasn’t tasty — it just didn’t feel like what we had expected it to be. The slices of sourdough were great however — they were crusty on the exterior and crisp with a good chew within; there was also an evident tang coming out of the sourdough from the fermentation process as well. Overall, a pretty decent attempt on a Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich; not ideal, but one that is a nice try considering the roots of C’rius Bake themselves.

Prologue by C’rius Bake is probably C’rius Bake’s most ambitious expansion for now — a move that they might have taken considering how cafes have since become a staple in the local F&B scene over the years. There is a clear distinction between the offerings offered by Prologue by C’rius Bake and C’rius Bake themselves — while the latter is that neighbourhood-ly bread shop that attempts to serve the residents with individually-packed buns and loaves of bread that suits their everyday needs at an affordable price point, Prologue by C’rius Bake has a focus on European-style breads as well as being that wallet-friendly, neighbourhood cafe where residents around would appreciate its existence as somewhere to catch-up with friends, or get some work done. There is also quite a bit of emphasis placed by Prologue by C’rius Bake to get their beverages right as well — one particularly evident move would be the use of beans roasted by Cowpresso Coffee Roasters for their specialty coffee; the espresso-based coffee also being well-executed with good latte art and a balance of milk and coffee that was better than some coffee-centric cafes that we had previously been to. While the food items at Prologue by C’rius Bake is priced higher than that of the breads sold at C’rius Bake, the combo sets does make the offerings at Prologue by C’rius Bake rather reasonable — think toasts with soft-boiled eggs and beverage from $6, and sourdough sandwiches / cakes with beverage at $10. We would think that Prologue by C’rius Bake is an extension of C’rius Bake at heart — it would probably be unfair for one to expect Prologue by C’rius Bake to turn out like one of those hipster cafes around; this is especially considering the price point, their roots and the space constraints that they have. Still, an establishment which we think Beauty World residents would grow to love; as long as the expectations are well-managed
