Yet another one of those “atas” renditions of Kaya Butter Toast that I have to add into my list after coming across their variant on social media — always been one who cannot resist trying any rendition of the local classic breakfast especially when home-made Kaya is mentioned in the description.

Think there isn’t quite any variation of home-made Kaya that is served in a cafe that comes with a comprehensive write-up about their Kaya — it mentions of being prepared in-house using the Chef’s special recipe with the magic lying “not in the ingredients, but in his heart and passion that he folds into the mixture with every stir”; there is also a mention about the Kaya being made with 6 hours of dedication and commitment as well. Done in a style that seems to suggest that their variant follows that of the Hainanese-style Kaya; the sweetness of the caramel is pretty evident in this one, all amidst the the coconut-y notes of the tropical jam. Liked how the Kaya here isn’t overly sweet nor carried any aftertaste (pretty typical of commercially made ones), but the greatest difference in this variant lies in the texture — smooth and creamy without any lumpy bits and fuses especially well with the butter given it’s similar consistency.

Some may call it silly for ordering a dish that is so easily replicated at home, considering the premium price tag that usually comes with such items when they are sold with a “homemade” title at cafes. That being said, it’s pretty interesting how different places seem to carry their interpretation of Kaya when they make their very own in-house — from the thin and runny, Pandan-rich renditions, to the familiar flavours of sweetness and coconut-y note without the additives; pretty much an eye-opener for me being one who grew up having kaya on my bread everyday during my school life.

Second visit here for 2 reasons, this place is much quiet than the rest, definitely under radar and I really like their food after my first visit.

I went for their medium rare steak which was surprisingly interesting taste. The manager actually shared that difficulty the chef faced when preparing steak. Firstly the sauce given was sourly which he said many customer don’t like it. But to me it’s kind of interesting taste to accompany the steak. Secondly because of the way the chef preparing the steak, which you have to finish the pieces as fast as possible. Reason being you will have a chewy part at the end when the steak was cold down (which I agree that I left 2 bites at the end as I couldn’t shallow it anymore). They do aware about this and the chef is trying to modify it.

I will definitely want to come back again to try the rest. $22

Not much people know about this place probably due to the space hidden inside one of the furniture store. But they do have a very beautiful seating area for the restaurant.

It took awhile for them to prepare my food but the wait is totally worth it. Two pieces of chicken thigh prepared with crispy skin but tender and juicy inside. Included on the plate also the baby potatoes, tomatoes, harissa, leeks and shaved fennel salad for $19.

From RAF, a new cafe that is located within the grounds of Grafunkt; a furniture store which had moved from Millenia Walk into the grounds of Funan Mall near where Tiong Bahru Bakery and Godmama are located.

Nestled within the furniture shop, RAF is pretty easily located considering its situated to the right of the main entrance of the store. For those who had been following me for quite a while, one would have noticed my love for the Pork Burger which used to be served at Necessary Provisions. Almost essentially the same as that burger spiritually, the Chorizo Burger comes with a burger patty that is made from Chorizo sausages; comes with Arugula and melted cheese over the top. Going straight for it, the burger buns are pretty generic; light and fluffy, it comes with various seeds over the top, but our favourite was the so-ever-savoury and mildly spicy Chorizo patty that tingles the taste buds — so sinful with those cured flavours but oh-so-good being thick and chunky with a good bite. Coming with fries on the side, the fried came thick and crisp; well-seasoned without being overly salty. Given how RAF's Chorizo Burger carries over the concept of Necessary Provisions' Pork Burger, the Chorizo Burger is something which we would most certainly crave for — an item that would see us coming back again for.
