Off the beaten track(extremely) in one of the sleepiest HDB estates I’ve been to, @reiwasoba.sg is opened by a Japanese couple and they sell buckwheat soba freshly made on-site by their Thai cook(who has also left her mark on the menu with some Thai dishes). To keep costs low, they run the business out of a kopitiam in Kelantan Lane, with an idyllic view of Rochor River.

I braved the journey there mostly to satisfy my curiosity for such an odd combination of location, culture and circumstance, as well as for the food of course.

The noodles are decent - delicate and slightly firm, and go well dipped into the aromatic tsuyu made with chilli oil, chicken and fish broth. With only a few thin slices of Spanish pork, $12 is a little on the steep side and I left still feeling hungry, but the quality is definitely there.

Both authentically Thai and Japanese, Reiwa Soba stands out as a very special stall located inside a quaint coffee shop at Kelantan Road. It rooted from a special partnership between the original Thai stall owner Owaran and regular customer Shinji, who introduced a spicy tsuyu soba dip inspired by soba restaurants in Tokyo.

Don’t forget to order the refreshing Mango Salad ($4/$7), a great side dish to complement the soba!

The flavours complemented Owaran’s Thai food well and hence it evolved into Reiwa Soba. Pictured is the Chicken Soba ($10). Soba here are made fresh from 100% buckwheat, hence giving a firm and yet slightly coarse-bitey texture, along with the subtle fragrance of the grain. The tsuyu was not very spicy, and it was quite different from regular tsuyu! Recommend to try this at least once!

The Mango Salad Soba ($10) features a generous portion of green mango salad containing shredded green mango, onion and chilli padi on top of cold buckwheat soba. The green mango salad has just the right amount of sweet and tangy notes, which is such an appetising and refreshing combination.

I’m so glad I finally got to try Reiwa Soba and I must say that their soba are really interesting and not found elsewhere. Novelty aside, the taste is on point (on par with those I had in restaurants, if not better) and the portion is very generous. What a gem - I’ll be back!

Finally popped by Reiwa Soba and boy am I impressed by this humble soba stall nested within a quiet coffeeshop in Jalan Besar area.

The stall uses 100% buckwheat flour soba that is freshly made each day. The Reiwa Pork Soba ($12) consists of cold buckwheat soba and thinly sliced Spanish white pork, served with a dipping sauce made from chicken, fish and seaweed broth and topped with chilli oil, leeks and crispy rice puffs. The dipping sauce is definitely a lot more flavourful than the usual shoyu-based dipping sauce, and surprisingly the chilli oil adds another layer of fragrance to the dipping sauce without turning up the heat. The delicious sauce clings onto the cold soba and soft pork slices and complements them perfectly.

This hidden place has attracted lots of people recently for their freshly made soba.

As I came just at the time they open, there already a queue to order their soba during early lunch time.

But the waiting was short luckily. For $10, I do appreciate the hardship of preparing the soba, the spicy of the sauce and the chicken.

As a heavy eater here, unfortunately the portion wasn’t satisfied for me as I needed to order more things to complete my lunch.
