Solo-lunched at Capitol Piazza not too long ago and the Special Ten Don Set at “Ryu’s Japanese Restaurant & Sake Bar” was my pick that day.
I found the quantity and quality of the toppings on the rice: a pair of shrimps, one sea eel and assorted vegetables, to be more than satisfactory. Their style of tempura features a thinner coating than what you‘d find at other Japanese restaurants but I actually prefer it this way because the taste of the seafood and vegetables isn’t overshadowed by batter.
According to the manager I spoke to, practically all the ingredients used at Ryu is imported from Japan. Even the water supposedly comes from Mount Fuji. Such dedication to keeping things as purely Japanese as possible is to be admired, don’t you agree?
As part of the lunch set, you can expect to be served an appetiser before the Ten Don (which is accompanied by a bowl of miso soup and pickles) plus a dessert after.

Value for money lunch set. Fresh ingredients. decent taste.

#tip #solo diners: They gave me a seat under the sun (which I rejected) and ended up having a bar counter seat (which is awkward since it's lunch time). So probably not my first choice to dine at solo.

Made of premium Fuji water- the exquisite "cake" (really better described as pudding/jelly) was further sweetened with caramel, and served with soybean powder. A well balanced finish to their standard 3 course lunch sets; the greedy, dessert loving side of me secretly plead for more. But the set lunches should leave just enough space for this portion of a sweet treat- rounding up an authentic Japanese meal experience.

If the okamochi box was ranked it would have felt like a "cum laude out of the all the distinction awards- summa, magna cum laude"; great but outshone by its neighbours (Tempura Moriawase, Iberian Pork)
The grilled chicken seasoned with 3 miso was just good as with the fibrous sides. While the rare offering of a DIY barachirashi tier was fun and more of an experience- our seaweed pieces lost their crisp easily and the unconventional addition of Japanese mushrooms amongst sashimi and tamago would invite subjective preferences.

Dainty Japanese bites- making it actually like a/my first Japanese high tea set; this was right up my alley. I am all for well thought and meticulously detailed food; so these were exactly that. The 8 bites change according to season's produce- the most adventurous item was the cooked sea snail that I single handily finished because of my conservative dining counterparts.
My favourite was the savoury cheese cube that was infused with sake and topped with blue cheese. It was good till the point that we were titillated to order a single portion of it as a side- something that's not on the menu but the Chef can easily accommodate to.
Other bites include tangy, exotic Japanese fibre; beancurd in 2 different presentations; bacon & potato.
Well paired with a cup of premium green tea (option to replenish at $5++/cup OR complementary with the 2 pax set)- each refill is a fresh brew, keeping your tea fragrant and thick each time.
