Rendang on Toast From The Food Peeps; a new hole-in-the-wall cafe situated in Maxwell House — a pretty small nook which serves up simple brunch items as well as specialty coffee brewed using beans roasted by Sarnies. A simple item with a local influence, the Rendang on Toast features Beef Rendang, Poached Eggs and Yoghurt on Sourdough toast. Really liked how the Beef Rendang comes all chunky here; not having any bits that are too fatty or veiny — the beef providing a good chew and a very slight gaminess amidst the spicy rendang that is all savoury and gives a good kick of spiciness that tingles the taste buds. The poached egg over the top comes with all that eggporn action worthy of the ‘gram; revealing its golden goodness as one slices through the egg, whilst everything sits atop a slice of sourdough toast that gives a slight crustiness and a good bite, absorbing the elements above it. Nothing too fancy, but incredibly satisfying with a local twist.

When You Fancy A Mediterranean Meal At Home, The Takeaway Menu From Here Is Worth Trying. T R E A T Recently, the kind folks from The CICHETI Group, with the help of their PR @bydanieleng, arranged to have lunch sent to me from their latest-to-open establishment, Caffe Cicheti. As I had been there a few months ago for a hosted tasting, I was familiar with the menu and knew what I wanted to have again. Ranked at the top was the Brussels Sprouts coated in pomegranate molasses and tossed with candied pecans ($12). The moreish creation didn’t disappoint - remaining smoky, sweetish and crunchy after the journeying from the restaurant. What surprised was the Marinated Iberico Pork Rack ($31.50) which I found to be even tastier than the last time. The subtly smoky, juicy meat hit the bullseye between tenderness and enjoyable chew. Served on the side, a refreshing Kale and Granny Smith Salad that helped with cut-through. The Lasagne ($27) was a big and heavy block of pasta sheets layered with plenty of chunky beef cheek ragu, cheese, bechamel and tomato sauce. Naturally, it had cooled and hardened slightly by the time I took it out of the box. But that was nothing a couple of minutes in the oven couldn’t fix. Once heated up, the #Lasagne softened and became really tasty. Owner-Sommelier @ronaldkamiyama had included a lovely bottle of 2015 Rioja for us to pair with the food too, complete with tasting notes since he couldn’t present the Spanish wine in person. Very smooth move, I must say. The “Crack Pie” ($11) was the selected dessert and it pleased in terms of size and a none-too-sweet taste. Coming together were almond frangipane, a cookie base and cocoa crumble. Worth every calorie it was. Salt Overloaded Salt Overloaded!!!!!!!! Cacio E Pepe (S$24++) Available at @caffecicheti in @southbeachavenuesg The pasta was way too salty and I could not take in anymore after a couple of mouthful. The staff took it away after I told him the reason. He asked if I wanted another dish which I replied Grilled Cheese (S$19++). The latter dish was much better. But I was shocked when I was billed in full for both dishes. Why should I be billed for full especially for the first dish? The staff replied that the dish was served, that’s why. The staff replied that he would talk to the manager and returned with a slightly discount for the first dish which now billed for S$16++. I paid for the meal unhappily as too much time had wasted. By the way the bill was taking forever to come. Bad Experience!

The degustation journey of Chef Justin Quek’s Terrier commences the minute you walked into the restaurant. As you are being ushered to your seat and with a glass of Bourgogne Blanc white wine on hand, you are ready to embark on a dining experience, inspired from the Southwest of France. The meal starts off with a canapé and in this occasion, we were treated to a lamb and cumin on toast which was delightful as the spices help mask away any form of gaminess. Moving on to the starter of a Salmon Sphere, a testament of the kitchen’s hard work to shape the mixture of salmon, avocado, apple, lime and fresh dill, served with a consommé of dill and cucumber, and crispy carrot salad. • Prior to the main course, we were served a Chicken and Brown Rice Velouté with Fresh Herbs (pictured), a unanimous favourite among us as the contrast of textures and flavours from the velvety savoury sauce and chicken brown rice blend is such a wonderful combination. This soup is definitely worthy to be coined, the chicken soup for the soul. • The main course is an Oven-baked Minced Pork with Herbs and Vegetables that’s shaped in a mille-feuille, plated masterfully with balsamic vinegar and yellow capsicum coulis. This course is also highly raved among several of us for its play on textures and balance of flavours. To cap off the evening, Chef Justin Quek will serve a dessert and in this instance, it’s the Snow White with Red Berries. This plate is constructed with a meringue that melts in your mouth, complemented with seasonal berries and chocolate sauce. Cheese, Cheese, And More Cheese! Quaint setting and a delightful experience. For starters, we had Assiette valaisanne and Malakoff, the cold cuts were of good quality and the molten gruyere cheese oozing out of the crispy surface is a pleasant surprise to the taste buds. The rosti Zermatt was indeed filling, with very crispy shredded potatoes topped with raclette cheese and ham. Rounded up the dinner with meringue and double cream which delivered a refreshing end to the meal.
Tartare De Boeuf Founded by the team behind Senso which has now closed, Coucou is an upscale Swiss restaurant with a cosy outfit. The restaurant is very tastefully decorated and reminds me of the time I was in Switzerland during winter, getting warmth from the stone fire place. Came here with my family for a birthday celebration and ordered a few dishes. Of the many dishes, the one that stands out is the Tartare de Boeuf - Beef Tartare Prepared with Swiss Sbrinz Cheese, Rucola Salad and Tomato Marmalade. In terms of price, it’s expensive - would classify this as an upmarket restaurant but not fine dining. If you’re looking to try a new cuisine, Coucou would be an interesting place but it’s not a place I would revisit.
Great Dining Experience I love the atmosphere and the food! They are sooooo good! My friend and I ordered the Rösti Burger, Cordon Bleu served with seasonal vegetables (you can choose your side dish) and Ovamaltine Mousse & Lakerli. Always wanted to try the Raclette cheese and finally, I got my hands on one! Service staff was friendly and I totally enjoyed the experience! Will be back again! :D
