Inside Scoop
The Populous Scramble ($19++) Fridays are never too early for a good brunch. For those that are looking for where to eat, @thepopuluscafe is a place that I’d recommend. Known for its rice and grain bowls, delectable brunch items, soft serves and coffee, I had The Populous Scramble which is a scrambled egg, bacon, fresh herb melange and feta croissant. Don’t be deceived by the picture. It’s actually very wholesome and filling. The croissant was flaky on the outside while soft and buttery on the inside. Scrambled eggs were creamy and not too jelak (rich) that makes it easy for one to finish the dish without much issue. Bacon used here is back bacon although I personally prefer streaky bacon. After all these years it’s been in operation, I’m still impressed by the menu selection and the quality of food here.

Dessert And Small Bites Place The Sticky Date Pudding used to be TO DIE FOR. But over the course of a few months, it seemed to progressively get sweeter and sweeter. It's still good but I would definitely hope they turn down the sweetness. The food is decent though variety seems limited and nothing to shout about. Truffle fries are a good side with the overly sweet pudding.

Chocolate Lava Cake Diets can wait when you visit AMANO. Apart from their handmade pastas, the chocolate lava cake is definitely worth a try, especially if you’re a choco-holic. Take note that the chocolate lava cake usually comes with vanilla gelato, but they were out, and they offered chocolate gelato instead so we had a double dose of chocolate (yay!). There wasn’t a long waiting time for the lava cake, and while it wasn’t served piping hot, it was warm, and oozed lava from the first spoonful. The chocolate was rich and decadent, so the fresh fruits helped to give a little reprieve. This was one of the better lava cakes I’ve had in recent months. The chocolate gelato melted a bit too quickly, but it tasted heavenly. Instead of pure chocolate, the gelato is more of chocolate hazelnut. Think Nutella in gelato form, because the hazelnuts really came through!

Carbonara (Creamless, $20) Nestled in a quiet Namly neighbourhood is this lovely new Italian restaurant. We visited on a Saturday night without a reservation but thankfully they weren’t super packed that day (it’s usually pretty crowded on weekend nights!). The mark of really good carbonara is when it’s not overly creamy, but still able to impart a luxurious mouthfeel - this is exactly what AMANO managed to achieve. The pasta was al dente, and it was perfect with the bacon in egg yolk-pecorino cheese sauce. The portion size might look small, but it was satisfying. There’s the option to add on meat into the pastas, but I just went with the classic bacon carbonara combination. The chef isn’t italian, but this is some really good Italian food in a beautiful setting, with swift service, attentive and friendly staff. I will definitely be back to try the other pastas and pizzas, and to make use of the other BB 1-for-1 offers!

Kaisen Chirashi Meshi [Promo at $19.80 till 29th Feb] Good time now to try out Kuro Maguro with their festive seasonal menu promo! Valid only during dinner times from now till 29th Feb, they’re serving up this Kaisen Chirashi Meshi set that’s topped with a variety of sashimi and seafood - anago, salmon, maguro, crabmeat, negitoro, kanpachi, ikura, prawn and mussel. Rice was more vinegary and though we would have liked a better bite, everything was fresh. The bowl also comes nicely in a filling set of chawanmushi, fried chicken, miso soup and fruits. It’s value for money we’d say! Thank you @kuromagurod and @jpassportsg for having us! ✨

🎶CLAp! I'll make you super CLAm~ Imma make you super CLAm~🎶 How do you like your CLAms cooked? While my favourite would be those stir-fried with sambal chilli 🔥 at BBQ stalls, this rendition at Mischief were equally delightful. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 . Their Buttered Clams ($18++) features 500g of fresh Korean flower clams that were sufficiently plump & juicy! 😍😍😍 The natural sweetness retained from the steaming process was a clear indication of its ultimate freshness! 💯 . The dashi stock was light & refreshing, with its slight savoury flavours complementing the sweet clams. 😋 Topped with some sauteed garlic, lightly browned butter, a splash of white wine 🥂, chopped parsley & okaka furikake seasoning, this was an unpretentious bowl that all seafood lovers would be delighted with. 💕 . For a more filling meal, go for their Clam & Bacon Linguine ($24++) which features a generous of clams, sauteed bacon 🥓, garlic, chopped Italian parsley & a splash of virgin olive oil. A wonderful plate! 💯

Don’t worry, these FRIES will make you feel better! 💯 Fries are always a nice side to have while waiting for the mains, don't you agree? 😉 Here at @mischief.sg, they have taken it up a notch by dressing up their fries in lovely toppings & flavours! 🍟🍟🍟 . Fans of truffle can look forward to enjoying their Truffle Fries Maximus ($18++), which features thick cut crispy fries, sauteed mushrooms 🍄 with thyme, grana padano cheese 🧀, white truffle oil & chopped chives. Like the strong whiff of truffle that perfumes the entire basket, making the fries so addictive! 🤤🤤🤤 . Looking for something creamy with a tinge of spice? 🌶 Their Atomic Fries ($14++) will be right up your alley! ✔ Comprising thick cut crispy fries doused with cheese sauce, sriracha mayo, spring onions, shimichi togarashi spices & okaka furikake seasoning, this exudes Japanese vibes 🇯🇵 & simply got me wanting more! 😋 . Moby ($22) This may be a place for drinks and people watching by the bay, but the food is no slouch either! This massive haddock burger basically feels like you’re having fish & chips; great golden brown crust and moist fish. Even the fries were great, with a crisp exterior not unlike fries from Long John Silver. What’s even better? You can get 1-for-1 here with #BurppleBeyond! ✌️

Extremely Dry Seafood Paella $38++ The food is not bad, but it’s neither great (the paella is extremely dry) nor authentic (eg. bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar; burrata; ceviche; what’s next - burritos? nachos?), the menu is short (especially tapas), and overall it’s poor value. It’s ironical that much better Spanish restaurants in Singapore have died, while this one continues to prosper. All these bankers and lawyers entertaining clients and one another? The best thing about Ola is the very friendly staff, and the most Spanish thing about it is the long list of wines from Spain!

For 1-for-1 Main Dish (save ~$45) Take date night up a notch at this snazzy 75-seater restaurant in MBFC. Share the impressive Suckling Pig ($45) that sees roasted loin served on a bed of barley and argula. Also great is the Black Paella — choose between the Lobster ($58) or the Catch of the Day ($38) to pair with your saffron-cooked rice, served with creamy herb aioli and sweet cherry tomatoes.
