Inside Scoop
Burpple Set Dinner $62+ While I was ecstatic to finally have a chance at trying Gastrosmith鈥檚 new private dining concept, I was also saddened to hear that this will be their final month at their current location in Katong i12. The good news is they intend to open in town sometime in the future. Their exclusive Burpple set dinner has got to be one of the best quality and value-for-money #burpplebeyond deals around, with 3 sharing plates for 2 and a substantial main each, all for the princely sum of $62+. Chef Dillon is the sole cook in the kitchen, and still he manages to execute astoundingly flavourful and well-balanced dishes across a broad spectrum of cuisines, all in a very timely fashion. First dish to hit the table is an absolute stunner 鈥 achingly sweet vine-ripened tomatoes over silken Japanese tofu, languishing in a bath of olive oil and barrel-aged balsamic vinegar. The sweet tartness of the the latter and richness of the former worked well with the lighter main components, with hints of citrus and the crunch of pine nuts adding delicious complexity. Taste: 4/5

Free-range Chicken & Chanterelle Siew Mai I鈥檓 always impressed by chef Dillon鈥檚 ability to consistently take Asian classics and successfully add his own personal twist to them. Who would鈥檃 thought of chicken siew mai, and that it would taste this good? The dumpling is so tender and meaty and is wrapped in a paper-thin skin. That would have been good enough for me, but here at Gastrosmiths good enough ain鈥檛 enough. The kicker is the deeply earthy porcini and truffle sauce that unexpectedly works amazingly well with the siew mai. This was the second third plate of Gastrosmiths鈥 exclusive Burpple set menu for 2, which is a steal for only $62+ for #burpplebeyond subscribers. Hurry before they shut their doors at the the end of May! Taste: 5/5

Hen-of-wood Mushroom Pasta The undulating sheets of handmade pasta proved to be the perfect carrier for the luxuriously cheesy and earthy cacio e pepe sauce, made from porcini butter, parmesan and pepper, complemented by the deep flavours of hen-of-wood and chanterelle mushrooms. This was 1 of 3 mains from Gastrosmiths鈥 exclusive Burpple set menu for 2, which is a steal for only $62+ for #burpplebeyond subscribers. Hurry before they shut their doors at the the end of May! Taste: 3.5/5

Waffles with Double Scoop Ice Cream Waffles are crunchy on the outside yet chewy on the inside, paired with Roasted Pistachio and Blue Pea Vanilla. Pistachio is a must have - no hint of artificialness and tastier than eating actual pistachios. However, Blue Pea Vanilla is a tad underwhelming and diluted, personally prefer Haagen Dazs Vanilla ice cream.

Waffles + Drink Set 1-1 (Part 2) Iced black drink (pretty average) Plain Ole Chocolate + Little White Rabbit White rabbit: has that little nice addition of starch? Paper on it. Not too sweet, flavour wise reminds me of the past Plain ole' choc: plain looking indeed but flavour has a very chocolatey finish. Rich and vibrant 馃憤 Waffles: Given 2 slices of waffles each. Would be great if they have a lil more consistency on it. First place was good but not crispy. Second plate was equally good but every knife down was crispy, felt & taste so much better with those magnificent ice cream. Overall, don't miss it if you are nearby, but if you do, they still have 2 other outlets although they started out with TPY

Waffles & Drink Set 1-1 (Part 1) Iced black drink Waffles w/: Earl grey lavender + roasted pistachios The usual star, been sick but nevertheless go for it since 1-1 Great pistachios for this time, the bites are much more prominent than the last and flavour wise is smooth Earl grey lavender has a nice pleasant light aftertaste. *I did mentioned the ones from Sunday folks are better but their price is on the higher ends ($9) compare to creamier ($3.10?) So anytime of the day I would choose Creamier Earl Grey Lavender but when I'm feeling particularly luxurious and am in Holland V, I may go for Sunday Folks Earl Grey Lavender Creamier will be missed dearly in Toa Payoh as my workplace is just 10mins walk from it haiz..

Char Restaurant 19/5/19 600g of Char Siew ($7.50 / 100g) 9.5/10 - Rich sweet glaze - Tender melt-in-your-mouth meat - Very similar to western-style pork ribs - Very 'jelat' after awhile; Very meaty - Highly recommended 300g of pork belly 脳2 ($7.50 / 100g) 8/10 - Crunchy crackling - Typical good pork belly - Good fat-to-meat ratio Half soya sauce chicken ($18) 10/10 - Moist and tender meat - Soya sauce was just right, not too saltish - Flavour from the sauce permeated throughout the meat and skin - Highly underrated dish (as typically gets overshadowed by the char siew); Must try! Charcoal Beancurd ($14.80) 7.5/10 - Charcoal colour just for visual appeal - Crisp beancurd skin on top of soft silky beancurd Special XO Sambal Fried Rice ($13.80) 3/10 - Sambal was far too mild; Hardly tasted any spice - Totally lacking in XO flavour - Only bright side was that it was not oily - Overall, it was too 1-dimensional in flavour (Other Zi Char restaurants serve much better Yang Zhou Fried Rice) Homemade Ice Lemon Tea ($3.50) 2.5/10 - Small cup (Overpriced) - Too sour; Lemon completely overpowered the tea #burpple https://www.instagram.com/p/BxpOwe0pxGy/?igshid=96kmvjn7hj8h

Good Char Siew But Tricky BEYOND vouchers I have to give it to the char siew. It鈥檚 pretty legit. BUT, the burpple beyond vouchers are almost impossible to use if you are dining in with a group of 2. - first of all, those signature meats (i.e. Char Siew, roasted pork, etc) are NOT part of the 1-for-1; the voucher for meat is really for other normal meat dishes. - secondly, the voucher for vegetable can be used for vegetable ONLY. I.e veggie with tofu does NOT count as a vegetable dish. - thirdly, the voucher for rice or noodles are strictly for that specific category only. For two pax, I guess no one in their right mind would order a fried rice*2 or hor fun*2. Overall, with that being said, it鈥檚 a place I may come back again but definitely with a group of 4-5 pax at least.

One of The MOST AMAZING CHAR SIEW around ($7.90/100g) This is really one of the best roasted char siew I have ever had?! MUST TRY!! (Not available on Burpple beyond as part of their 1-for-1s but we had to get this & here鈥檚 a glorious 400g for us) Look at meat, with a shiny layer of melt-in-the-mouth fats, worth every calorie man 馃檶馃徎 the different sauces available are also so very good!! Had this with their yang zhou fried rice & XO fried rice, with their vegetables which were pretty good as well!
