Inside Scoop
Burpple Set Dinner $62+ While I was ecstatic to finally have a chance at trying Gastrosmith鈥檚 new private dining concept, I was also saddened to hear that this will be their final month at their current location in Katong i12. The good news is they intend to open in town sometime in the future. Their exclusive Burpple set dinner has got to be one of the best quality and value-for-money #burpplebeyond deals around, with 3 sharing plates for 2 and a substantial main each, all for the princely sum of $62+. Chef Dillon is the sole cook in the kitchen, and still he manages to execute astoundingly flavourful and well-balanced dishes across a broad spectrum of cuisines, all in a very timely fashion. First dish to hit the table is an absolute stunner 鈥 achingly sweet vine-ripened tomatoes over silken Japanese tofu, languishing in a bath of olive oil and barrel-aged balsamic vinegar. The sweet tartness of the the latter and richness of the former worked well with the lighter main components, with hints of citrus and the crunch of pine nuts adding delicious complexity. Taste: 4/5

Free-range Chicken & Chanterelle Siew Mai I鈥檓 always impressed by chef Dillon鈥檚 ability to consistently take Asian classics and successfully add his own personal twist to them. Who would鈥檃 thought of chicken siew mai, and that it would taste this good? The dumpling is so tender and meaty and is wrapped in a paper-thin skin. That would have been good enough for me, but here at Gastrosmiths good enough ain鈥檛 enough. The kicker is the deeply earthy porcini and truffle sauce that unexpectedly works amazingly well with the siew mai. This was the second third plate of Gastrosmiths鈥 exclusive Burpple set menu for 2, which is a steal for only $62+ for #burpplebeyond subscribers. Hurry before they shut their doors at the the end of May! Taste: 5/5

Hen-of-wood Mushroom Pasta The undulating sheets of handmade pasta proved to be the perfect carrier for the luxuriously cheesy and earthy cacio e pepe sauce, made from porcini butter, parmesan and pepper, complemented by the deep flavours of hen-of-wood and chanterelle mushrooms. This was 1 of 3 mains from Gastrosmiths鈥 exclusive Burpple set menu for 2, which is a steal for only $62+ for #burpplebeyond subscribers. Hurry before they shut their doors at the the end of May! Taste: 3.5/5

Waffles with Double Scoop Ice Cream Waffles are crunchy on the outside yet chewy on the inside, paired with Roasted Pistachio and Blue Pea Vanilla. Pistachio is a must have - no hint of artificialness and tastier than eating actual pistachios. However, Blue Pea Vanilla is a tad underwhelming and diluted, personally prefer Haagen Dazs Vanilla ice cream.

Waffles + Drink Set 1-1 (Part 2) Iced black drink (pretty average) Plain Ole Chocolate + Little White Rabbit White rabbit: has that little nice addition of starch? Paper on it. Not too sweet, flavour wise reminds me of the past Plain ole' choc: plain looking indeed but flavour has a very chocolatey finish. Rich and vibrant 馃憤 Waffles: Given 2 slices of waffles each. Would be great if they have a lil more consistency on it. First place was good but not crispy. Second plate was equally good but every knife down was crispy, felt & taste so much better with those magnificent ice cream. Overall, don't miss it if you are nearby, but if you do, they still have 2 other outlets although they started out with TPY

Waffles & Drink Set 1-1 (Part 1) Iced black drink Waffles w/: Earl grey lavender + roasted pistachios The usual star, been sick but nevertheless go for it since 1-1 Great pistachios for this time, the bites are much more prominent than the last and flavour wise is smooth Earl grey lavender has a nice pleasant light aftertaste. *I did mentioned the ones from Sunday folks are better but their price is on the higher ends ($9) compare to creamier ($3.10?) So anytime of the day I would choose Creamier Earl Grey Lavender but when I'm feeling particularly luxurious and am in Holland V, I may go for Sunday Folks Earl Grey Lavender Creamier will be missed dearly in Toa Payoh as my workplace is just 10mins walk from it haiz..

Drinkable Idea - I Am Awesome Bulb ($9.50) Presentation of this drink is super cute. The lightbulb bottle is brought to the table and shaken right in front of you before the stopper is taken out and a wheat straw is inserted (special mention for eco-friendly straws, whoop!). The Drinkable idea is a mix of coconut juice with pulp, basil seeds and goji berries which culminates in a sweet, light and refreshing beverage. Nice for the novelty, but probably not worth the $9.50. I鈥檇 stick to regular coconut water at a fraction of the price.

Healthy Food Available Till Late! Healthy eats are notoriously difficult to find late at night. It鈥檚 probably because health-conscious individuals tend to eat earlier at proper meal times instead of having dinner past 9pm, but not everyone is that disciplined. Good news for those in the CBD or Telok Ayer area - My Awesome Cafe serves up nutritious and healthy food and beverages up till 11.30pm. Get your post workout fix here - be it a Salad, wrap, protein packed smoothie, shake or dessert. The decor is super awesome as well, and they鈥檙e located in an old chinese medical hall. All their staff also wear t shirts proclaiming they鈥檙e awesome. How could you get more awesome than that? Overall a very chic hipster place to hang out with friends late at night but still have healthy food options available. Does tend to get super crowded on Friday nights and public holiday eves so note that it鈥檚 not really ideal for a quiet chat with your friends, and do book in advance to secure a table.

My Awesome Burger Surprisingly soft and tender patty for the sandwich. The cheese coating was light and doesn鈥檛 grow old as you make your way though the sandwich. Surprisingly interesting.

Badass Raclette Aussie Burger $26.50 I dare you to call me out on a better burger. I love my burgers with textures and bite. Sandwiched between buttered and toasted brioche sesame bun are 1. A morale boosting fried egg 2. A thick and juicy ~200-250g beef patty, coarse mince 3. coated in a robust raclette with nutty and bitter depth of taste, 4. Girded with pickled vinegary beetroot 5. Thinly sliced gherkins 6. Crunchy Zoodles 7. Two grilled pineapple slices 8. Onion Jam hidden somewhere under the zoodles Usually comes with wedges and coleslaw but there鈥檚 way more than enough carbs in there! I usually opt only for the vinegary freshly-made coleslaw as it clears the palate for extended enjoyment of the burger.

The Sarnies brownie $5 The best brownie around town with a texture of a fudgy flourless dark chocolate cake. Boldly 1.5 inches thick, perfectly crusted, with a thin layer of molten sauce in the middle. Further drizzled with dark chocolate sauce and a sprinkling of nuts (crushed Sunflower, pepita, peanuts, cashew, dried goji) . It鈥檚 sweet but it鈥檚 desserts. Only dressed up with condiments at dinner, plain at other times. Nicely warmed up for all the feels. Add $3 for 3 scoops of vanilla ice cream. I prefer mine seriously chocolate. Beats many $10 choc cakes hands down.

Tandoori chicken Salad $16.50 Two huge skewers of tandoori chicken east, quinoa, mesclun, freshly chopped tomatoes, raita and yoghurt dressing. The breast is very dry, typical of tandoori meats. Generous portions for this crowd favorite. Time for a protein pump up!
